I would never call an elder "honey, sweetie" or any other name of endearment. To me that is just condescending - now.. on the other hand if they want to call ME that.. they may
I call my elderly friends (when I say elderly.. I'm talking 70+ and I have some into their 90's mind you) - Miss _______ and my kids call EVERY adult no matter their age Ms. *their first name* or Mr *their first name* - and our DD is 18.5..son is 10.5. DD still calls everyone Ms/Mr. Its just how they were raised. Now CLOSE family friends.. no... they get to call them by their first names...people they grew up with all their lives, so they are like family, so they can use their first names, but again, we ask first what they'd prefer to be called. When the kids were little, it was still Ms/Mr. until they reached about 8.
So Ms. Mary and Mr. Pete across the street there...yep thats what my kids call them. We on the other hand..call them just Mary and Pete. On the flip side - Miss Hattie at church is 92 and we ALL call her Miss Hattie - even the 70 year olds call her Miss Hattie
I think if I ever called her sweetie or hun..she'd whack me with her purse - and I would deserve every single hit of it to be certain.
