I'm Really Sick of This...Poison Options?

We had something kill two young chicks (about 6 weeks old) a while back. These chicks were in a secure coop. One chick we never found. The other was dead on the coop floor with its insides eaten out like you described. We have hardware cloth and buried dog fencing on this coop and saw no evidence of a racoon or other predator tearing into the coop. We figured it had to be a rat or a snake. The cats have taken care of a few rats and we are putting out the plaster of paris and peanut butter balls in places that the chickens and pets cannot get to them.

We set a "food trap" for something that has been trying to get into our coop for the past three nights. We set a garbage can with dog food in it outside the door to the coop. We had to shoot two raccoons tonight. Wish we had a live trap so dh could move them far away from here but did not and he hated to have to dispose of them but needed to be done.

careful, its usually illegal to relocate. And an average raccoon has a 15-20 mile range. He'd be back within a day or so to his old territory.

it's never fun to end a life, but sometimes it is necessary.

Here is an option. I have not used it, it is illegal to use it in such a manner. Lock up anything you dont want killed if you use it. Be quiet about it. You should be able to get it from your local grain elevator.

LOL...ya'll gave me the same suggestion! Thanks for the PMs and links. I really appreciate it.

Should I place the stuff outside of the pen, inside of the pen. I do not really want to draw whatever it is back inside the pen but if it won't take it any other way...

Thanks, we weren't aware that it is illegal? My dh said he hated to dispose of them but he knew they would be back and they were about five feet from the coop door. Thanks for the heads-up on the legality of moving them.
