And imma be honest - there are times I really, really want to say something to people about how I think some of the aspects of meat-eating are cruel.

I'm going to be honest here too. I was going to let this go, but it just keeps nagging at me.

This is not about you, Auntie, in any way, shape or form, because I very much like and respect you. This is about the anti-meat eating viewpoint in general.

I've been reading just about every post on the meat bird forum for years now and I can't remember ever reading anything there even insinuating that animals are nothing more than a commodity. If anything the regulars in that section seem to be keenly aware that their meat birds are living beings and should always be treated in a humane and respectful manner.

To be completely honest pretty much every time I've seen something on BYC that *I* considered to be cruel, abusive or neglectful it was posted by someone who keeps poultry as pets.

My point being that the cruelty lies in the hands of those who perpetrate it, not in the eating of meat.

I agree. I don’t know if i have seen it really being cruel for people owning them as pets in particular, but i suppose it makes sense considering many might not put them out of their misery due to the fear of hurting them?
But i couldn’t say it better. :D And this is probably why i really respect people on BYC (the very educated people!) who own chickens and then cull them, because they know what their doing and treat them well. They don’t lock them away in cages with no sunlight.

I never bring it up. Never ever. Unless I'm asked or if there's the "Do you have any dietary restrictions? question somewhere. I can't think of a single time it's come up without eye rolls at the very least or insults at the worst. Even here on BYC from people I care about and respect.

And imma be honest - there are times I really, really want to say something to people about how I think some of the aspects of meat-eating are cruel. But I know better. It's not my place, and all it would do is deepen the divide. If folks see animals as commodities as opposed to living beings, nothing I'm going to say to them in that moment will change their minds.

And then I'd be called a snowflake...
You/we can make a change. It's just painfully slow.

I've read it multiple times, but I'll admit maybe I'm reading more into it because of my philosophy. My religion sees it differently, and I don't want to offend anyone or start an argument, so I won't explain further. But what you say here makes sense and illustrates the difference of thought that causes the misunderstanding.

If you read the ingredients on most of the garbage most people are shoveling in thère mouths then we can agree on "gross"
I had strawberries and avocado with lime juice for breakfast, and tomatoes with marinated pressed tofu for lunch. Haven't had dinner yet, but I think it will be fresh spinach, acorn squash, pistachios, and wild rice. Yum!

That actually sounds amazing. I need some good food back in my diet, today I only ate cake. A lot of cake. But just cake.
