Hi there.

This made me chuckle to think about.

I've been around OV (Original Vegans) when I worked for a Yoga retreat way back in my youth, and I think that I know the kind of people you are talking about. :)

And yep, never once was anyone pushy, angry, self-righteous, preachy, or any of the things some people claim Vegans to be.

I've never been shamed for being a meat-eater. Not even once, over the course of over 20 years being around an area FULL of those type of people.

They would if asked talk about why they chose what they did, but it never came up unprompted. It was me being curious about the foods THEY were eating because it was so different from anything I'd grown up around.

They didn't ever make me feel bad about it, but they're choices made me think. It's directly because of them that I went down the road to keeping chickens, and a garden.

I personally think that for the most part it's projection. People feel like they should feel guilty after learning about the practices of the factory farming industry and then project that attitude.

I've never seen anyone just go around to places where people eat meat and criticize them. I can't even imagine it.

Knowing how every Vegan I've ever met has acted that's absurd to the level of being hilarious. Like you'd only ever see it in some kind of fake joke skit on SNL or some other show. Like can you imagine them going into like a Longhorn Steakhouse or something? LOL

Now...my old Aunt, God rest her soul, SHE did have an opinion about what EVERYONE was eating, what they were doing, and such. LOL Had nothing to do with being Vegan or Carnivore, or what have you. Just a well meaning old lady trying to keep you healthy. :)
I never bring it up. Never ever. Unless I'm asked or if there's the "Do you have any dietary restrictions? question somewhere. I can't think of a single time it's come up without eye rolls at the very least or insults at the worst. Even here on BYC from people I care about and respect.

And imma be honest - there are times I really, really want to say something to people about how I think some of the aspects of meat-eating are cruel. But I know better. It's not my place, and all it would do is deepen the divide. If folks see animals as commodities as opposed to living beings, nothing I'm going to say to them in that moment will change their minds.

And then I'd be called a snowflake...

Strict Jains in India wear masks to stop themselves accidentally inhaling and insect, and sweep the ground in front of them so as to not acidentally stand on a bug. Despite all this, I am sure there is living matter hurt in their moving from one splace to another and sitting.
It's about not actively, purposely, and knowingly taking a life. They know they can't prevent all deaths through those practices. It's about doing everything they can to preserve life.

I have no problems with someone being vegan or a carnivore. I think it is personal choice and have seen a few snarky comments myself. I do eat meat but would never attack someones belief. People think it is their world, their way or it is wrong. Why? Being different is what makes the world beautiful and interesting.

No results yet. I think it'll be a bit more than a week from the present time.

That's interesting about your chickens. Having it happen several times, at different times of the year, does make it seem like the feed is the cause in your case. Are you willing to share which ones have been good for you, and which one is the problem?
I would if they were large corporations, but they are all small family owned mills and it wouldn't likely help very many people to mention who they are. If my test came back that the tags were not what I was getting, that would be a different story.

Honestly, I just googled ag laboratories near me. I've used UC Davis before, but I didn't want to use a govt funded lab. I ended up using MidWest Labs in Nebraska.

Nice, thank you for sharing that info.

I've never directly been shamed for being a meat eater but I have been shamed many times by vegans, vegetarians and even meat eaters for raising my own meat. "that's awful" "that's disgusting" "how can you do that?" "don't you feel bad?"

No, I don't feel bad. :smack

I feel GOOD about what we do because we're not supporting factory farming.

Yeah, I don't understand that reaction. I'd MUCH rather have folks raise their own and give them good lives.

I always just assume that they just can't imagine doing that because it removes that "filter." If you buy your food at a grocery store, there is that disconnect between the cute cow and the package in the case. If you raise and butcher your own, then to them it must be akin to killing a pet. But they don't think about the animals having much better care than a big factory farm.

People think they know what is best.
Some (only a selected few!) vegans think that people who eat meat are killing the planet.

I don’t like to hear about animals finished inhumanely like in huge factories. But i think its so great when people own chickens and give them a good life beforehand.

Either way, even if you don’t do that, it could bother me less. I just think it’s important to know where the food you are buying comes from first. Just how i think of things i guess. :D

You're right. People act that way about hunting too.

Somehow it's fine if they buy that factory farmed meat, but hunting or raising your own meat is beyond the pale. So bizarre to me.
