We got back from Eureka safe and sound late last night. It was an exhausting week. My neice was diagnoced with a Staph infection of the blood, that eventually infected her heart, lungs, and bones. She had one surgery to drain an abcess that was both on her heart and the covering to her lungs, at that time the doctor made the choice to take out part of her collar bone and one rib. She had a device called a "wound-vac" for that huge incision. It ended up they took a 3x3 chunk of tissue and mucle from her chest wall because it was so infected. The wound vac was exactly what it seems, they put sponge material inside the wound, then apply constant suction to close the wound faster. It was very painful for her to have the sponges changed but the wound looked so much improved after only three days.
She also had consistent shortness of breath and constant fever. Day before yesterday they did a thorocentisis and an ultrasound and removed some fluid from the plural space around her lungs. Of course it tested positive for staph too, so she had another surgery to place a chest tube to drain out the infected fluid. As of yesterday they had removed over 35 ounces of fluid from the plural space and her oxygen levels improved a lot. She was placed in ICU for 24 hours with threat of intubation because, though her O2 had improved, when she was off constant oxygen she couldn't maintain on her own. They put a Cpap machine on her as a last resort before intubation and it worked well. She is now off of oxygen all together except when she sleeps.
My niece also has one heart valve that is very infected with the staph and it's quite a severe infection causing her heart to be very weak. She was going into tachacardia (heart rate over 160 bpm) with any emotional stress or physical stress. Since her 02 has improved so has her heart rate and it's now saying at about 115 bpm under stress.
She is being medi-vac'd out of Eureka today and will be admitted to Harborview in Seattle for probably about a month. She'll be on IV antibiotics for the next 5-6 weeks.
Hugs and continued healing thoughts to your niece. Just be thankful they actually had the smarts (lack of a better word for them) to take her to the hospital. She's in good hands now and that's what counts
