How original, right?! My name is JoAnn and I am new to NWPA. My family and I moved here a year ago at the end of this month. My husband and I were raised in FL for all of our 40 years each. With the exception of a 2 year stent in MT for myself. We have 4 children (1 prodigal girl that we desperately miss, 2 boys, and a final little girl.)

We moved to PA to reboot, enter a wholesome environment, and start at a Second Chance in life! We have been generously gifted a chicken coop from our neighbors. It's a HUGE blessing! We've been waiting for years to do this. We are NEW to Chickens. What seems like a lifetime ago, about 15 years now we had a couple of Bantam Silkies for our Eldest daughter. I can honestly say that I do not remember much of anything about that time, raising them.

We were excited about getting chicks, but I think it might be best for us to start with a few hens, and then work on taking on chicks maybe next year instead. The kids and I have researched and my oldest boy is DYING to have a Sultan Bantam. I am VERY interested in Plymoth Rock, Iowa Blue, Australoop, Isban, and Rhode Island Reds. Mainly I chose these for their beauty (in my eyes), temperament, and output.

We learned all of this based on the research that BackYardChickens put online for us. I don't know how to thank you enough for this website and I am super excited to be a part of this community! I am NOT able to afford to purchase, I believe they're called (Pullts?) of the above breeds to get started. As I said I am too nervous to start with chicks. But, I did find online someone who is selling 8 month old Golden Comets to me for $5 due to a tragedy in their family. So, I think I will go this way to start IF they're still available.

I am hoping that I answered the list of questions. I am so looking forward to becoming a part of this community.

Glad you're here !

A must have for your poultry is a FIRST AID KIT for any issues that would arise. (https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/suggestions-for-a-first-aid-kit.1150128/)
It's definitely better to have it and not need it rather than need it and not have it.

Also, make sure your coop(s) have a proper amount of VENTILATION. (https://www.backyardchickens.com/ar...-there-and-cut-more-holes-in-your-coop.47774/) Your chickens will absolutely thank you for it!

One last thing, if you're into gardening, feel free to join this years SEED SWAP (https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/seed-swap.1220129/)

G’Day from down under JoAnn :frow Welcome!

Thank you for sharing a great introduction! :clap

I am pleased you delurked and hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun.

If you include your general location on your profile, this will assist others. Location, climate, season etc can be important factors when members are responding to any questions you may have and vice versa.

You might want to also Find Your State Thread and pop in and say hello.

In case you did not find them during your research, BYC has a Learning Centre and also Topic of the Week discussions which I have found to be a great resource, informative and sometimes entertaining; so definitely worth checking out.

If you would like to share Pictures and Stories of your flock when they arrive, you have come to the right place. BYC’ers never tire of these and do not back away slowly or commence eye rolling when the photo album or home videos come out ;)

Best wishes and good luck!
