I'm so old I Remember when:

Re: Electricians.

We have an independent guy we've used, and really liked. When we needed some work done for a bathroom remodel, we called him. He was booked solid for about 7 weeks! He said he can't even give himself a day off. We didn't want to wait that long; the electrical had to be done "next" in the remodel, which we were otherwise doing ourselves. So we reluctantly told him we'd have to find someone else, but would call him again.

When you do good work, are reasonably priced, and get it done in a timely fashion, word gets around.

The company I retired from was like that in its early days. Their only advertising was their listing in the Yellow Pages. (Back in 80s.) Other than that, it was word-of-mouth.

The problem we had was that not all electricians were experienced in what we needed done so that thinned out the crowd a great deal. If they were not used to what we needed they would try to connect the switches in a loop instead of to a contact or a shunt trip. The switch can't handle the amps and would blow. Also the switch had 3 wires, one was never used depending on if you needed the switch wired normally open or normally closed and they would connect the hot, common and ground all to it seeing 3 wires and once again blow the switches at 100.00ea.

I can tell future generations that I grew up part way in the 20s.

I think I'm actually a late 2000s one though. And that means I grew up as a 2010s kid.
NOW yer makin' me feel OLD, kid. To me, people who grew up in the twenties knew Bonnie and Clyde. And if you have to look them up, you'll find me hiding behind the davenport, sucking my thumb under a crocheted afghan ... granny squares, of course.:D

We recently hired a flooring company to install a bathroom floor. The finished floor was all uneven, some tiles were higher than others and there was a big lump in a corner. I don't remember what happened afterwards, but I know the manager of the company quickly sent out two other people to rip out that floor and install a new one correctly.
