I'm so old I Remember when:

Oh, yes! During summer vacation, our moms gave us money to get them cigarettes out of the bowling alley vending machine while they were bowling with their league... [Juke box playing "Love Child", "Don't Sleep In The Subway Darling", "Baby Love", etc.] We each knew our mothers' brands...

I remember buying pickles from a barrel. And penny candy that was a penny a piece. From a general store that had a wooden floor, a screen door, and a porch.
That sounds just like our general store when we lived in rural Kennesaw, Georgia! (Late 60s) They had a "Colonial Bread" plaque on the screen door. And a Coke machine with those classic green glass bottles that rattled down when you bought one... You put the empties in a metal rack next to the machine. Kids collected discarded empties and brought them in to get the return-deposit money from the store.

One of the funniest!
