When I was in college in the early 70's the Govt. had a program, that if you weren't doing well in class they would give your a job and teach you skills. You got a small salary but they provided training, transportation, clothing, food, and comradery.

Heck, they even gave you a rifle and ammo.

I remember when young folks joined the Peace Corps to see the world.
I think it was the Navy that had a slogan "Join the Navy and See the World?"

I remember the movie "The Ugly American".

It went a lot of behind the headlines of what was happening in the world.
(The actual 'Ugly American' in the book was a great guy.)

I remember my dad using mules. I think he spent as much time fussing at them as plowing.

I remember that mules were mostly used for farming here. They were huge and most were friendly but some were mean and would bite. They were all very strong animals.

I also remember when farm kids were excused from school the first couple weeks to help finish getting the crops in. Still had to do the school work but didn't go to class.

I'm old enough I couldn't vote until I was 21.

I can remember when the voting age and the drinking age were changed to 18. I can also remember the drinking age being turned back to 21 not that long afterwards.

A much more fun reason for being out of school than putting in tobacco or getting up peanuts! That was dirty work.
