And-the gum cigarettes.

Oh, that's right! I totally forgot about those. They sometimes appeared as Trick-or-Treat candy, along with pink bubblegum cigars! Kids would play "grownup" and pretend to smoke the gum ciggies, mimicking the many adults in our lives who smoked. (In the 50s and 60s)

I could barely breathe when it was my Mom's turn to host the neighborhood ladies' bridge club, 4 card tables of suburban moms smoking like chimneys...at least it was summer and we could escape outside to play! When they met during the school year we were away in class, but the house smelled like a stale ashtray when we got home. My brother and I were never tempted to smoke - despite the candy and gum cigarettes!
