Places still accept cheques!? (Yes, that's how Canadians spell it!)

Cheque is a noun with the same meaning as you ascribe. Check is a verb as in "check the engine" or "check off a list". Check is a also noun when it is short for . At least that is the way I was taught. (and I'm NOT Canadian)

Another things I was taught - which seems to be going the way of the dodo - is volumn, as in one of a series of books. "Which volumn of the encyclopedia has Mt Everest?" Even autocorrect wants to change it every single time to volume or column, thinking I don't know what I mean.
