What grounds could they even have for doing this? It’s not as though clotheslines are a “danger to public health” like chickens are (so says my local town ordinances).

So do unkempt yards, and abandoned houses, and dead trees…some days I wish I had gotten into politics .

Don't worry -- they've got fines for all those things, too. No cars in yards except on pavement, no overnight parking on streets without prior permission, no faded paint, no lawns higher than 3". . .

That wasn't a consideration, considering the amount of laundry we have would take too long to air dry.
