The PlayDoh came in metal tins but with a plastic top I think.

The homemade kind was. I don't know how the recipe was shared but we made both that and the one with glue and borax (silly putty?) because Mom got recipes somewhere.
I remember my sister made her own fresh dough for her and my children. She made the dough with easter egg dye and a lot of salt. Baked the creations in the oven. They looked okay for a few years (not forever).
