I'm so old I Remember when:

Collect calls: person you were calling paid the long distance charges
Person-to-person: if they weren't available you didn't have to pay for the call
Dialing "0" for an operator
Dialing a number to hear the time
Paying less for long distance calls after 8pm, a lot less after 11pm

I still remember the number you called to get the time and weather report

And my first phone number that I gave to my friends

Who remembers
Before cell phones and caller ID and answering machines when you would run to answer the phone just in case it was that long waiting phone call you were hoping to receive from that one special person

411 for directory assistance

Before you could dial 9-1-1 for emergencies
You called the operator “0” and all long distance calls went through the operator

And when there were red fire alarm boxes on every block

the younger people thought it was funny to pull the switch when there was not a fire

"At the tone... General Telephone time is... three... forty-five... and thirty seconds... *doot.*"

I remember that voice well.

You all ever have like a call in swap n shop on the radio?
You could call in and explain what you had for sell and it broadcasted on the radio. Then if you heard something you wanted you could call in and they'd give you the person's contact phone number.
It was on on Saturday mornings so me and my friends would call in as pranks. Usually one would advertise something made up which was often a slang word for something dirty that our group had made up then others would call in acting interested and wanting more details. The radio people never knew what we were talking about and even being clueless they'd try their best to help sell the item.
Maybe you just had to be there or maybe we were slightly touched in the head but man that was fun times.

I remember
Prank calls
Calling the grocery store and asking something like “do y’all have any pigs feet?” When they said yes we would say something like “you better watch out here they come running!” And laughing while we would hang up the phone
