I'm so old I Remember when:

Along those lines, I remember when you got Lego as individual pieces. There were no kits (which I think is how they are sold today) and you just built whatever your mind could dream up.
I remember being enthralled when I became aware that there were roof tiles and window pieces available. It opened up a whole new world for me!

And now we have this ...
It's DS' working LEGO train! In the pic, it's set up at our church's annual Family Train Day event. I was skeptical, at first, but when I realized that every single LEGO City set is to scale, it became the "goto" Christmas and Birthday gift for years. The Big Bonus was that when DS was younger, it all stored away in the same box - no bazillion different toys to find places for. Nowadays it takes up an entire corner of the basement and come out regularly to play. Even I got into it. A few years ago, my BD gift from DS was the Beatles Yellow Submarine set - way cool!
