Firearms are not to be feared. They are a tool for doing a job, just like a hammer and a saw. Learn how to use one safely, and treat it with respect. Good on zookeeper for reaching past the dirty trick your brothers played on you, and going about learning firearms correctly.

I wouldnt feel to safe yet. Secure up that coop. That raccoon taught you a lesson, where your weaknesses in your coop are. It is only amatter of time before another comes along.

Your coop is only as strong as its weakest point and you cant, IMO, keep killing raccoon because you havent made a predator proof coop.

I feel really bad killing something sitting in a trap--doesn't seem very sporting.
