I'm so shocked and sad Please Help Hen is DEAD

Hello watersoflethe- I live in Mira Loma too. Small world. Well odds are she was probably egg bound. And that egg could have been another hens. EE's in my experience are very hardy, yet the only thing I have lost any to is egg bound problems. It is a genetic problem in most cases and can not be avoided. Hens with this possibility should be feed a proper diet in order to try to keep it at bay.Being fed oyster shell and greens or grass, are the best things for this type of hen. But still no gareentees, because it is genetically predispositioned. I am sorry for your loss, I hope you don't ever have to experience it again. I hate to lose my EE's, they are one of my favs!

hello. nice to hear you are from around here. i dont think the egg was from any other hen because it was blue and she's my only EE. i have one white leghorn that's not laying yet but would be white eggs, and a barred rock that lays small brown eggs, and a silkie that lays small cream eggs. so the egg she was sitting on was blue and had to be hers. i dont think she would've been egg bound because she just laid an egg or can it happen right afterwards too? thanks for the info though.

I lost a cockerel the same way. He was fine sitting on a roost when I opened the door to let everyone out. At 11am I went to check for eggs, and he was curled up, cold and dead in a nest box. No indication he was sick, no mites, lice, or paralysis, etc. He was about 16 weeks old. I personally believe the 'natural' suggestion.

Sorry for your loss. It is heartbreaking to lose a favorite.
