Ugggh. Dumb dumb dumb me. And dumb dumb dumb seller. I drove 4+ hours return yesterday to pick up some new birds. From a lady who's been "breeding for 20 years", yadda yadda yadda. She loaded the chickens for me (didn't want me walking around, for biosecurity reasons), and said she "looked them all over super carefully for any parasites or anything"... By the time I got home/settled, it was too dark for me to notice anything. This morning, even AS I was walking up to the integration/isolation coop I could see IMMEDIATELY that one of the girls had awful leg mites 💔💔

Compared to MY girl:

I'm sooo bummed and angry. Trying to give her the benefit of the doubt (and know I'm not blameless in this), because she was recommended quite a lot on our area poultry page... But 😡😡. It's sure going to be in her best interest to respond to my messages before I burst and post pictures online 🙈🙈🙈

Has anyone gone straight to gasoline?! I had a super mild case a few months ago, and the endless oil and scrubbing etc etc was so overwhelming. Is it bad that I don't feel as bad trying it because I'm not attached to this bird yet?! 🙈🙈

Now excuse my whole I go spray permethrin on every square inch of my property 🔥🔥🔥

At least you had them isolated. That's awful, a really shady seller. In my experience, just because someone has been doing something for years, doesn't mean they're any good at it.
My grandmother would have used kerosene, but I'm sure thst practice is out now.

They ARE isolated... But if I'm being honest, the isolation coop is a lot closer to the main coop than I usually have it 😥😥 (snow and mud made me not feel like moving it, and I was overconfident). PLUS the door of my main coop was blown open in a massive storm overnight, so the birds were all milling around checking out the new additions this morning 🤬. But I think if I spray and add some cloves and ACV and such we should be okay. No time for eggs to have been laid yet hopefully.

Leg mites are not all that bad. Try giving her a foot bath and then treat her with either vaseline or ballistol oil.
But it sure is a bummer!
I suppose you're right :) it WAS "that bad" when I had to treat my whole flock... But at least this is only one bird and hopefully caught soon enough to prevent spread. Thank you for the perspective!
