No, it's not the same stuff. Flockraiser has no extra calcium so you have to put oyster shell out for your layers, they'll eat what they need as long as it's available. It's around (may vary some by brand) 20% protien so the chicks get enough to grow and while it's a bit more then the hens need I don't think it hurts them, but does help the feathers come back in after molt.

Thanks everyone for your advice! I think I will wait another week or two, we have had some very stormy weather here lately, and it is easier to keep an eye on the youngsters and make sure they are safe where they are for now with the bad weather and all. Plus, my daughter will have her dog back with her next week, and that will give me some time to walk the run and make sure there are no openings big enough for the youngsters to sneak out through and fix where needed. I was wondering though, my older girls have never flown out of their run (I don't have a top on it, it is just wire fence on two sides, 3 ft high with privacy fence 6 ft high on the other) but since I am having trouble with the young ladies flying out over the top of their wire pen, which is roughly 4 ft. high, do I need to clip their wings? If so, how do I do that by myself? Do I need to treat the cut ends with anything after clipping, if it is needed? Thanks again for the all help!!!

I clip wings regularly due to finding a lone chicken on top of my 8 foot hen house.

No you don't have to dip or coat the clipped ends.

I just take the hen, pull the wing out and clip 1-3 inches of length from the first 4-6 feathers at the end of the wing, then release the hen. I also only do one wing, it throws their balance off so they don't fly as high, but can still get onto and off the roost.

It is really very painless.
