I free ranged mine to an extent the first year I had them...they had a large enclosed area (big enough for a mare with foal at foot to run around in) to be free in. I also left them fully flghted and nobody left because they had their water there. That said, once the hawks move in, which they did after a year, they had to be locked up. I do know a guy who free ranges a lot here in Illinois, but his areas are mostly covered by evergreens so the hawks never see the ducks. Beware however...Cooper hawks can and do fly quite well through dense trees, unlike other hawks!nope, never free ranged any of them when we owned call ducks either. They are hawk bait
