I have buff orps and cornish cross meat birds that will be 4 weeks old on Monday. THe buff orps are about a quarter that size and fully covered in down and feathers. The cornish cross meat birds look exactly like yours. They grow so fast that the feathers can't keep up. Another four weeks and that roo will be ready to butcher. I know that you probably were looking for laying hens, but that's not what you got.
Where did you get them??? Whoever sold them to you had to know that they are meat birds and not buff orpington hens.
How many did you get of theses? If you give them time to mature and are not into butchering them, you could sell them to a farmer who butchers and make a bit of money off them. At least it will pay for what they have eaten.
Try not to get too attached as Cornish X have heart problems due to their very fast growth.
They can't breed as they are a cross that makes them sterile.
The crossing is what makes them a very fast growing chicken.
I hope you are not too disapointed in this news. We are here for you if you are. Big shoulders here and you can vent if you need to.
It's true they are not meant to live long. I raised my rescue cornish Xs up to age 8 months, when the last one passed away. They did lay some eggs, one even tried her hand at broodiness, but couldn't finish the job. The roo weighed 18 lbs. when he passed from a heart attack.
I will post them in that feed and see what they say....but.....I guess I won't really be too awfully sad. It happens. The smaller one is really a sweetheart though. I kept thinking and researching and they just did NOT look like what I thought the buff orphingtons would look like. I hate for them to just die though.
