Immediate crisis, abandoned egg, please help

You should try to order a couple of day old chicks so that when your chick hatches and you get her sorted out with a heat lamp and food she will have a friend right away. Otherwise she will be too sad and be a permanent emotional wreck (hard to deal with!!!) Before they arrive you will have to pick her up day and night since she will require companionship and a mom. Sleep with her box next to your bed. Sleep in the garage if you have to.

Sneak the chick under mom in the dark of night. Be up in the morning to make sure chick is safe & accepted.

Cookie has already been safely reunited with her family.

I'm jumping in without reading all the posts. I've put foster chicks under a broody hen in the dark without a problem, sometimes over a period of 2 days. I'm hoping to read some good news here!

In addition to the advice above, may I suggest that you place Cookie on a grippier surface, maybe something like no-slip shelf liner?

If Cookie is still splay-legged tomorrow you will want to hobble her. This is how I fix mine:

Cookie has been safely reunited with her family, and after a rocky start where she refused to approach Sarah Jane-- who pecked at my hand and scared her-- she is fitting in perfectly with the rest. She is obviously a little frail still, but was too active and lonely to stay in that little box forever.
