Great topic you started here.
I grew up in a crowded suburban area, so the thought of supporting a community didn't really mean anything. Now that I live in a small, rural town, I get it. I want the few little businesses in my town to do well. There are some things I can't get right here so I drive into the city and shop at a chain store. But I try to support the home team. Now, the local hardware store has their fair share of "Made in China" merchandise, but if I have the opportunity of supporting a family in my community by buying from them, I'll do it.
I'm kind of neutral when it comes to Wal-Mart. I don't shop there regularly, but I don't actively try to avoid it either. I think if our town had one and it provided much-needed jobs, I'd be there every week. I know the big thing is going after large corporations right now and condemning them for their unfair practices. However, the fact is with the way our economy has crashed those large corporations are still providing jobs. IMO, now is not the time to send a message to corporate America. That time was 30 years ago, but greed and rampant consumerism led to corporations that were willing to do anything to get prices down so they could sell, sell, sell. Daveroo hit the nail on the head.
