It's difficult to find things made in America. I know, I've gone to that website listing things made in America. The website shows just how sparse American made items are. I fully agree with your assessment of consumerism. Wal-mart put us there. They were the enablers. They started out with Made in America. That was their big motto. Then Sam died and now it's Made in China. Prices got lower and now Americans expect everything to be cheap priced. Everything is now throw away. TV goes out, it's cheaper to buy a new one than try to get the old one fixed. Closet full of shoes. You bet, because each pair can only be worn 10 times before it falls apart if you bought them at Wal-mart. Yes we put Wal-mart where it is today, but they supplied the drug to start with.

Well, this is a super interesting topic, I hope that we can continue on this, after reading your topics, I learned a lot.
In this case our towns were in a death spiral, factories closing, small stores leaving due to peoples lack of money.
I live in a town with just over 4,000 and the main buisness is "clientel" from the Mental Health system.
Walmart came in and offered some pay, better then running out of unemployment, my mother even needed the job they offered and she was a professional in another line of work too, decent money for this area, insurance and plenty of hours.
I often look at it as the hand that feeds our community.
Way cool to read facts tho. Thanks, what else have the opinions of many have?

Rhett&SarahsMom :

I refuse to shop the local WalMarts.
They have put small family owned business's out of business.
I know Target isnt much better, but at least the quality is there. and my local Target draws a better "class" of people. meaning people that dont leave the house in their pajamas.

All they're doing is throwing a higher price on the same made in China crap that Wal Mart sells for less. You'd rather pay the higher price just so you don't have to look at someone in p.j.'s??

One of the problems I have here is a HUGE lack of choices. I have WalMart and a couple of locally owned places. One of the Local stores I go to when I can get what I need from them (which is a fair amount of the time), the other, I refuse to shop. The employees are all friends of the family that owns the store and feel no need to even be polite. The meat goes bad by the next morning, pet food is full of bugs, most things are out of date or very close. AND the prices are at least double if not triple what I pay at WalMart. Shopping at the "good" local store is great, but also costs me MUCH more than WalMart. I try to do what I can on my own so I don't have to buy from any store (growing much of our food and trading what I have with friends who raise beef and pork, etc.) but then, I am adding to unemployement by doing that, too. I know we should all do our part, but at the same time, I HAVE to feed my family.

I dont shop where "trash" shops. And yeah. I will pay to shop where I dont have to look at, smell or shop with people that dont respect themselves or others, by putting on clothes with no holes or food stains on them.
Oh and I check labels. More things that are sold at Target, at least here are made in the US. Compared to WalMart. AND the clothes are a better quality. I never see "ho" clothes at Target here. But it's all they have at the Wally

Sorry, this is wayyyyyy out of place in this thread and I know it, just can't seem to help posting it.

I found myself speechless in my above post. WOW kinda rare for me.

Anyway, I just wanted to say this. Maybe coming from a grandmother who could easily be called "trash" sways my opinions a little?

My Grandmother was a tiny little thing, 4' 11" before osteoporosis humped her little back. She rarely (never?) bathed. Kinda smelly with a combination of dirt, sweat, and woodsmoke. Didn't do a good job of keeping her house. Always wore dirty little polyester pants and an old, dirty, men's stocking cap over her greasy grey hair. She was also kind and gentle, loved flowers and animals and children. Never had a harsh word for anyone and was loved and respected by everyone who had the good fortune of knowing her.

She has a massive stroke when I was 10, died in a hospital bed in my home when I was 18 (that is where she had been for the past 8 years).

Anyway, what is my point? I have no clue. Maybe just that "trash" could have far more depth that you could ever imagine.

My choice. You all dont have to agree or like it. But you also dont see what kind of trash lives in my area. I refuse to shop where the employees smoke right in front of the store. so you have to walk through a haze of cig smoke on the way in. The clothes at the front of the store usually smell of cig smoke because of this. Their standards of hiring are low. They have no qualms hiring convicted child molesters to work the floor. Nor do they require the use of deodorant by cashiers or other staff. And these people draw others like them into the store. So no. I will NOT shop my local Walmart. I will drive to the next city over to shop Target. Atleast the store is kept up, the employee smoking area is out back and the cashiers are all bathed. As are the customers

The trash I mean are child molesters, illegals that loitering. Illegals that are driving with NO LICENSES and causing at least 2 accidents a week in the parking lot alone. Those with really nasty body odors. The strippers and prostitutes that dont bother changing from their "work clothes" before they head out to good ole Wally.

Move here. See how long you shop the local Walmart

sorry about your grandmother.
My dad died of a massive stroke. My moms husband had one 5 years ago now. She takes care of him by herself. A stroke or old age is one thing. What I am talking about is different. I'd offer to take pics, but I dont go there. However if I remember the camera next time I am out around "town" I will take some pics. I lvie in the city. Not the quiet suburbs or the bucolic country
