I have a six year old little red cochin that I love dearly. She has been a wonderful mother and surrogate mother. She knows her name "Buffy" and runs to me when I called out "wormies". I noticed that she was not excited about a nice fat nightcrawler I brought her. She was moving her head circular and a little bit of spit like stuff from her mouth. I noticed that her crop was big and hard so I have brought her inside and separated her to treat her for impacted crop. It has gone down a bit but what is left if like a hard golf ball and it seems to be too hard for a crop? I have been feeding her lots of water and even colloidal silver so it does not turn into a yeast infection and become sour crop. I have been giving her a few octivida hemp oil drops too. I have been trying to withhold food but with her it is hard because she has always loved to eat. How can you tell the difference if it is an impacted crop or a tumor in the crop? I have held her on my lap and gently massaged the area and she seems to love it and gets relaxed and closes her eyes.

I am sorry to hear about your sweet little Cochin. Can you post a photo of her crop?
She is so fluffy that a pictures would not reveal anything. It has gone down since yesterday but is golf ball sized and very hard. I am hoping it is not a tumor . She seems to enjoy sitting on my lap while I pet and stroke her while I massage the crop. She closes her eyes and relaxes.

Do you have other chickens whose crops you can identify, and then compare with hers? Many of these exams are easier to perform when chickens are on the roosts at night asleep. Check the crop first thing in the morning.

Yes, I have other chickens and had my first experience with a sour crop on one of my Americaunas years ago. It was very sad. I read up and did all I could for nearly a month and I could not help her. She also had a pendulous crop where it hung down and was very big. Since then, I have been very up on looking and checking my chickens crops because of that one sad experience. Buffy's crop is not sour. I am giving her the colloidal sliver to keep that from happening. I have had many wonderful victories with using colloidal sliver so I ended up buying a colloidal silver generator to make our own. It is safe for pets too.
