My brother and I did surgery on one of my hens today. She has been having on going problems with soup crop and impacted crop. Her crop had gotten huge and was really bothering her. It was to the point we had to either cull her and help her. My brother did the cutting, I did the cleaning out, she had a huge mass of hay and grass. Then I used a needle and thread and stitched her up. We applied some livestock sauve on it and put her in a cage by herself. She was eating and singing last time I checked in on her. Like my brother said if she doesn't make it now at least we gave her a fighting chance. Was a simple surgery to do and will do it again if ever needed.

Way to go!!!! Way to be brave.

Keep an eye out for infection. Do a search on wound care... there is a LOT of info on here if you need it. Watch her and get her back out with the girls even for a little bit. That helped me with reintegration. The first day she had a little walk with the others and it is a great way to get them eating again.

My one birdie that didn't survive the surgery may have died from an infection or because her gizzard was impacted. I didn't preserve her well enough to have her checked. But be sure to use some sort of medication to keep her healthy just in case.
