?impacted crop

lump is left side holding hen, checked out my other chicks crops and they are more to the right. So now i'm thinking it is a tumor. thought it was weird that the left leg was not working right with an impacted crop. Getting mineral oil down her was not a problem, I just mixed it with applesauce and yougurt and she eats it like crazy. If it Mareks from reading it sounds like they pick the virus up young and it can manifest at maturity??? could not find incubation period info. I have 6 other chickens and no other problems, so far. I feed the hen crumbles tonight ad will check her crop after, just to be sure it is a tumor. Thanks for all the advice and encouragement.

So what your hen probably has is a tumor, not necessarily Marek's disease (though it could be). If this chicken is a pet and money is no object, I would take her to a vet.

Here is some info, in case she does have Marek's: A chicken can carry the Marek's virus for a long time before showing any sign of disease. Some may be resistant to it. There is a vaccine for this that can be given to baby chicks, but it is not 100% effective.

There are different types of Marek's viruses, accounting for the fact that the disease can present in many different ways, with very variable mortality. Symptoms can come and go, though most birds tend to go downhill. What varies is how quickly they deteriorate. How many of your chickens are affected, how many die, and how quickly they die, depend on which virus they have, the individual bird's immune system, and whether or not they were vaccinated.

She is part of my original first ever 3 chicks I got this spring. Named Minnie by my granddaughter a very nice pullet and pretty Buff Orpington. But she always seems to have one problem or another. Don't think I will spend money on a vet, even though I would really like too! She continues to be upright and alert and I noticed the lump at least a week and 1/2 ago. I am trying

to find out from the Poultry Breeder I got her from if they vaccinate for Mareks, that should give me the answer if it is Marek's or a tumor.
