My chickens are barely laying at all now - I'm based in the UK and it's been one of the wettest, coldest summers ever, yet we were supposed to have a killer heatwave from today. All it's done since 3pm is rain and thunder! The less sunlight, usually the less eggs, so I am not expecting much from my two new RIRs.
I bought them last week, and the two things I check out for proximity to laying are the depth of colour to the comb (presuming it to be a red comb), and the finger width of the pelvic bones. This means grubbing around in your lady's bum, while she indignantly squawks and flaps maniacally. Once you've found the two bones, see how many fingers you can comfortably rest between them: if only two, there's still a way to go, and if your days are also getting shorter like ours, and there's less UV for them, it'll probably be next spring. However, if you can rest three finger tips there, and her comb is swollen nicely and ruddy, you could be any day now.
But like everyone else has said: give time, time. She'll lay when she's good and ready.
Lots of cluck
