Yay finally!! and such a cutie. Looks like mama my have helped some I have seen a few like that too.
I've heard that mama ducks may help their babies hatch but I wasn't expecting that at all. I have plenty of experience hatching chicks, so I was completely unprepared.
We have at least 3 more babies this morning. Looks like there may be more than just 1 dry one under her right wing, and I saw 2 under her left wing. I'm glad I went out to check. There was a pipped egg about 8 inches away from the nest. I expected it to be a quitter, but sure enough it was tapping away. I slowly placed the egg near her and she grabbed it and tucked it back under her. I'm guessing it got pushed out accidentally. I've completely blocked off all access to the area until the babies are all done hatching. Then I'll be moving them to a more secure and practical run I have set up.
Another update...definitely 4. Looks like 2 males and 2 females. I caught a glimpse of another hatching as well.
