Thank you everyone for your input.
And thank you wilds of PA for the links. That's a ton of info to digest!!!
I have narrowed down the breeds/varieties to Chocolate Whyandottes or Barnevelders (double laced, blue double laced, silver double laced).
Whyandottes- Pro: I can get two trios and outcross them all to black Why's, leaving me with a bigger gene pool to start with. They would also be very popular, and would sell well. I am also more familiar with Whyandottes and their standard. This makes it easier to pick out high quality birds. Cons: I am concerned about them fading in the sun. I know that this will certainly not effect their breeding, but if I go to all the trouble to import, I wanna show them off and possibly bring a few to some shows (in AOV class). I am also unsure where to get high quality choc. Why's.
Barnevelders - Pro: I have wanted nice Barnies since I got into chickens. I can get a trio of the blue double laced, and a trio of the silver double laced. If I breed them together I could get double laced, blue DL, splash DL, silver DL, and blue silver DL (of course splash silver DL too). Another big plus is that I could possibly visit a breeder while on my honeymoon in Amsterdam this November. And it would be nice to have some chickies from my dear husband's homeland (Netherlands). Con: I am unfamiliar with the standard, and I am worried that my efforts to improve the Barnevelders here in the US will just end up a mess. Also, there are fewer high quality Barnies here to outcross with. And how well will they sell? I am interested in birds that fit the standard, not lay the darkest egg.
I would really like to hear from someone who has done this before!
ETA- I just read in Poultry Press that there is a chicken museum in Holland!!! *SQUEAL*
