***Importing Birds*** info needed, opinions appreciated

Orpingtons!

Also please import some Spitzhaubens! There has been very serious problems with inbreedings going on. So any new fresh blood is very welcome!

I've been watching some Coronation sussex on eggbid go for some unbelievable prices. They were from imported stock. They made enough on the two auctions I saw to pay for all the import and quarantine fees.
I just thought you might like to know from a business point of view.

I am not totally sure on the process as I have not imported birds myself. I have friends that have imported birds. I think first you have to contact the quarantine station you plan on using, as you will have to reserve/deposit the space you need. I think the fees range according to bird type.

Bring More lavender in, the more the merrier..certainly wont stop our projects..
things will be much better next rounds to come for most of us in the USA with our projects..

We need Jubilee as well, projects are rolling regardless of whats brought here.

even if they pull it off, it will be years to they get any were with increasing there population on the very limited amount of birds they will be able to get if they can get anything at all...

Best of luck with the legal import..

Thank you everyone for your input.
And thank you wilds of PA for the links. That's a ton of info to digest!!!

I have narrowed down the breeds/varieties to Chocolate Whyandottes or Barnevelders (double laced, blue double laced, silver double laced).

Whyandottes- Pro: I can get two trios and outcross them all to black Why's, leaving me with a bigger gene pool to start with. They would also be very popular, and would sell well. I am also more familiar with Whyandottes and their standard. This makes it easier to pick out high quality birds. Cons: I am concerned about them fading in the sun. I know that this will certainly not effect their breeding, but if I go to all the trouble to import, I wanna show them off and possibly bring a few to some shows (in AOV class). I am also unsure where to get high quality choc. Why's.

Barnevelders - Pro: I have wanted nice Barnies since I got into chickens. I can get a trio of the blue double laced, and a trio of the silver double laced. If I breed them together I could get double laced, blue DL, splash DL, silver DL, and blue silver DL (of course splash silver DL too). Another big plus is that I could possibly visit a breeder while on my honeymoon in Amsterdam this November. And it would be nice to have some chickies from my dear husband's homeland (Netherlands). Con: I am unfamiliar with the standard, and I am worried that my efforts to improve the Barnevelders here in the US will just end up a mess. Also, there are fewer high quality Barnies here to outcross with. And how well will they sell? I am interested in birds that fit the standard, not lay the darkest egg.

I would really like to hear from someone who has done this before!

ETA- I just read in Poultry Press that there is a chicken museum in Holland!!! *SQUEAL*

You should check out the Barnevelder_Chickens yahoo groop. There are several breeders and even overseas members that might be able to give you some good input. The group would be excited to talk with someone who has the ability to import new lines of Barnevelders.

The blue double laced and the silver double laced would be extremely popular colors to introduce to the US. IMHO. I for one would love some blue ones

Good choices!!!!

Let us know hows, whys and more questions about importing birds. If you can, take pictures of the birds before heading to US, import facilities, paperwork, etc. etc.

Wish you all the luck!

I know that this is way out in left field but Im pretty sure that there are breeders of Ayam Cemani in Germany and Eastern Europe. Its just a thought.

You would never be allowed to import them from Indonesia, but you could get European stock. Im sure they would be a hot commodity.

Otherwise I vote for the tolbunt Wyandottes.
