Importing from a foreign country

Okay so it probably won't happen but I've been thinking about how a lot of breeds originated from another country and/or they may have better stock there so I thought maybe I could eventually import birds or eggs. Like for instance, Australorps and Orpingtons from England.

But I can't seem to find any info on the laws?

I found these two pages which provide pretty good info but it mentions they have to have NPIP coming from another state? But what about another country where they might not have NPIP? Do they just need a health certificate? Also do they need to be quarantined? I can't find any info on that?

And do you think it's better to get eggs or adults? I feel like eggs could get pretty banged up on such a long trip? But adults could suffer too? Especially in quarantine?

Why not get them from here in the US. There are lots of breeders with good birds. I just feel the risk is to great for that when you can get some from in the country.

Well, I probably will, especially since I don't plan on showing or breeding or anything (though I probably will in the future) and there are lots of good breeders but I was most just curious how the importing process works. Plus even from like good breeders, there's certain things like type or whatever that's been bred so far away because they've been separated from them for so long. But I haven't really looked at breeders in the states so maybe there are breeders who breed that type, I don't know

There are also many breeds that we do not have available to us or such limited genetic material that the only way to improve the breed is to import new blood. GFF is an example of such a problem.

Yeah exactly and better said than me aha maybe the Orpington and Australorp wasn't the best example because they're pretty common here and are lots of good breeders but there are plenty of breeds that are either extremely rare or don't exist here or only come in limited colors. And even with the breeds I mentioned, the type on some of them is completely different

I have been thinking about this too lately, and wish it were easier and more affordable to import new blood. I got Redcap chicks from Murray McMurray last year, and only 4 of the 13 lived to adulthood. Those 4 are small and puny and really not candidates for "saving" a breed. I have heard that Derbyshire Redcaps in England are much nicer bigger birds. It sure would be great to be able to see some of those. And even better if only they could be brought here.

Maybe somebody will import them and work on them? Or you could and sell them?

Speaking of which, I wonder if it would be cheaper to go in with someone? Like maybe a few people could either locate/contact breeders from here, or perhaps even go there and find them, and then everyone could import them together? Might be cheaper to go in together on the costs?

I was looking though and the fees at the import centers for daily care are expensive.

If I'm reading this (below) right, it's like $10/day for "daily care" for chickens? And they have to be quarantined for a minimum of 30 days..... that means it's like $300 for ONE chicken.... which is absurd. It does NOT cost that much for care a month even for my 8 chickens for shavings, a bag of Nutrena Hearty Hen layer feed or Purina Flock Raiser, and water... and they probably use the cheap feed too not even good food. But maybe it is for the "labor" involved but there is like none :/

But that means 2 chickens is like $600
