in memory of my mom
who at least got to die in the place she always wanted to live

head-on collision with a drunk driver on the Queen Kaahumanu Hwy
in the middle of the day

My step father was killed by a drunk driver when my brothers were 10 and 12 years old. That was fourteen years ago, and we can still not go past the spot where it happened without choking up.

Sad for everyone involved,
Not only drunk drivers should not drive but those
with an illness that would challenge their driving skills.
My 36 yr old cousin , his wife and both children
were killed, hit head on by a driver that had an
epilelactic sizeure. he also lost his life..
so many familes hurt.
May they all rest in peace.

This Sunday will be 4 years since I lost a great receptionist to drunk driving.

She was the drunk. I begged her to stop drinking. She had driven right past my home not 5 minutes before her death. If only she had stopped, my wife and I would have put her on our couch or even a blow up bed with a blanket.

Young, beautiful and only 21.

Gratefully she was the only one hurt and killed.

That evening at about 5PM before we left work, we were both standing outside of our cars and chatted for a couple of minutes. My last words to her were, "Just remember, I love you Heather, be careful."

She wasn't.

What a waste. All of my patients mourned her loss.

I will never forget my neighbor coming over after he got released from the hospital of his accident he and his wife were in April 15, 1996. They were both in there early 20's, whole lives ahead of them, she was almost done with nursing school. She died within a hour of impact, he had internal injuries and survived. The thing he said to me (I will never forget) why her and why did I survive?
(They were hit by a drunk driver who ran a red light)

What do you say? what can you say? What should you say? There is no easy answer.

I have one more I will tell, because everyone should think of there actions:

A girl I went to high school with, she got in the car with several girls, all were drinking or had been drinking. She was not. They got in a wreck, all lived. But the girl that was not drinking was paralyzed from the waste down. Plus her speech was affected.

I could tell so many more, I grew up in a small town. Could we not find better things to do with our lives? How could kids be so reckless? Adults know better, or should, I should say. Why not stay from behind the wheel?

I know drinking is addictive, I have had to deal with that from relatives. So I know that, but hard to imagine taking a life no matter what or leaving someone paralyzed or brain dead.

One more thing I will add, I remember taking the keys more than once from friends. I guess I had the soul of a older person. I just remember saying I want to make it to my high school graduation ALIVE!

So sorry for everyone's losses

(sorry i made this so long)

And WEAR A SEAT BELT!!!!!

Ten years ago there was a beautiful young girl killed practically in front of our house. She skidded on ice and her car went on its side. Had she been wearing her seat belt she would have been hurt - but she was not -and her head went out the window.

It was left 30 feet behind where the car finally stopped.

Try explaining that to her mother.

If there was a disease that killed as many people as auto accidents did we'd do everything we could to cure it. Yet we love our cars..... We love our booze, we hate being told to wear seat belts....
