Along with what dawg posted above (3 days, 3 weeks, 3 months), are you letting the dogs meet on neutral territory before bringing it to your home? It helps with seeing if they will get along in the long run.
Growling between new friends is normal. Feed in separate areas. Make sure the new one doesn't have full reign of the house at first and that any other animals have their own quiet places to retreat to. Introducing a new dog takes a bit of work- even puppies coming into a home isnt smooth sailing for resident dogs. They all have to learn their place.

as in, he didn't work out?

As far as determining whether or not "it's working out" are you the one making these decisions, someone else, or as a household?

We actually weren't planning on keeping him. We took him from the shelter overnight because they wanted some more info on him and have someone coming next week to get him. Sorry if I didn't clarify.
