In the pursuit of a coop!

Well I took some pics of the proposed area but I will have to wait until I "hatch" in order to post them.

Right now I am searching to figure out the best way to floor out the coop.

Anything that is washable is good. Vinyl tile, laminate remnants, linoleum etc. You'll most likely cover it with some type of bedding like shavings, sand, straw, etc. I'm using left over wood laminate planks for my coop floor because it's what I have. It won't last forever, but it will easily pop apart and come out if I want to replace it. I thought about sealing it with some type of polycrylic too but I think it's unnecessary. I've seen how the floor holds up in my house with my accident prone child. It does great with moisture. I'd go to a flooring place and pick up anything cheap. I think the solid piece of linoleum would be better for longer term use only because seams are were the most damage occurs.

I work in a furniture store that sells vinyl flooring and sometimes we have parts of a roll left over or mis-cuts that I can get "cheep". I really think the vinyl would be the best route for cleaning up easily.

Here is a pic of the end of the shed that I plan on using to build the coop. I want to enclose the area where the tractor is sitting for the coop. I plan on replacing the window on the end with a screen door for easy access from inside the shed where I can store the food and there is a water hook-up. The run will come out about 6 feet from the side of the tractor and connect back to the end post on the woodshed lean-to in the back. I can use the metal fence posts at the front of the tractor to re-enforce the ends of the woodpile for safety.

Helping mom clean off her porch yesterday and scored a 3' x 5' piece of 1/2 inch plywood and the shelves out of a closet that she had to use for her central intake unit. Yay! More materials for the coop.

When you start make sure you get a big box of screws or nails, our first attempt
at building our coop, we ended up buying three small boxes of screws and It would
of been cheaper to buy one big box.
Lessons learned.

Yeah we learned that one while replacing the roof of the house after Katrina. Hubby has a nail gun that he loves to use too!

I think I have most of what I will need. Hardware for the doors and nest boxes and pvc joints and pipe for the feeders and waterers are on my list but I might be able to find all of that in my dad's shop. He saved all sorts of things and I know he would love for me to make use of his stash. I did order some of the chicken nipples because I know no one around here has those.

Still working on the coop layout and trying to decide on breeds for my flock.
