i always thought the AR-15 was the civilian version of the M16

AR-15 is the basic platform and operating system. The "military" models basically just have a selector switch for full-auto/burst. Any AR-type rifle in .223/5.56 is an AR-15 - if I'm not mistaken, M-16 is literally the military designation of the AR-15.
