in this random rambling thread we post random pictures

A few photos from Staglieno Cemetery in Genoa, Italy. The largest outdoor museum in Europe, these wonderful sculptures have been suffering from neglect. I'm working with the city of Genoa, finding sponsors for the restoration; so far we've restored five of the sculptures.

Visit and like our facebook page; lots more beautiful photos. And share it with your friends: https://www.facebook.com/StaglienoSculpture/

The first one is a cuttle fish isn't it?
Just saw something on cuttlefish on public television. They have unique skin, unlike anything else in the animal kingdom. They are blind, but their skin has some of the same type of receptors that are in eyes, and seem able to sense the color of anything around them. Then their skin, which has different colors in it, can instantly morph to display the same colors that they are laying on, a camouflage that hides them from predators. They can also raise bumps (giant goosebumps?) from their skin to change their texture and shape, hiding themselves even better.

Doesn't acid rain dissolve marble statuary?
How does one go about restoring missing marble?

The surface of marble is porous. Pollution, moss and mildew, all eat in and break down the surface. The cleaning process is slow and careful- first brushing off the loose dust and dirt, they a blend of methods: poultices that sit on the surface for a day or two and draw out the dirt, biocides to kill the moss, mildew and bacteria, washing carefully with distilled water and Q-tips. The most recent restoration we sponsored involved use of a laser. The wavelength is adjusted to cause the dirt and bacteria to basically vibrate off and get vacuumed away, without the equipment touching the marble and without any negative impact on the stone itself. Afterwards, special breathable sealants and water repellents may be applied. (breathable means they won't trap in any moisture that penetrates, but will keep surface moisture from penetrating). A consolidant is sometimes used to hold the fragile surface together.
