Have a ton of hawks here but, I've never seen them dive for a meal. They perch on a telephone pole and just drop down on birds in the grass. All the folks with bird feeders,
have changed their m.o. I stopped feeding birds when all the dropped seed was attracting mice.

Thankfully the one I saw was a ways from where I live, so it wasn't a threat to the chickens. Back in fall of 2017, I took these pictures of a falcon perched on a telephone pole looking over the yard.
