The Wiki article on the show says the character's name was Willy.

Imagine naming your kid William when your last name is Gilligan. William Gilligan. That cracks me up.

No, he's fine! cavemanrich got it. The dog is on his back, looking over his right shoulder towards the camera. The way his eyes and nose line up your brain tries to make sense of it the way it is and it looks weird, that's all. I didn't mean to upset anyone. Here's a happy dog running across a field to balance everything out.
