in your opinion when is it to cold

Next winter, when I have chickens, I will fail to let them out only when it's too darned cold for ME to go out in my winter parka, coveralls and boots, and too cold take off the winter mitts long enough to open the latch. Say, around 30-40 below.

They won't have to go out if they don't want to, they'll be able to just stand in the pop doorway if they like, looking out and meditating on the meaning of life. (Or trying to figure out how to steal my cell phone and call a travel agent) But even at that temp, I guess I still have to go out and check their food and water.... Dang!

my hens go out in sub zero, they are fine...they will just go back inside!

True. I believe in giving them the choice. The pop door is open every day and I leave it up to them to decide.

Im in NE ohio and mine go out all winter as long as there is a spot without snow on it. They act like snow is a black hole. I also tarp a section on the back of my run to block the wind. When they do decide to stay in I give them something to do every so often like a head of cabbage or something like that.
