Is something wrong? I have a ceramic heat lamp with a temp controller set at 97. Most are cuddled under the lamp, but won’t quiet down. The room they’re in is completely dark. Does it mean somethings wrong? Or are they just chatty? There’s one wrong leader who’s noisy, and afew others seem to join along. Thanks again. This is stressful lol

They are letting you know they are not comfortable. Quail are usually pretty quiet. They are probably too cold. Warm it up and have a place they can get out of the hot spot if they need to cool off.

They are cold, I use a red heat lamp, I hang it from the over the top of of the brooder, I cover the brooder with hardware cloth so if the lamp falls it won't cause a fire.

You don't want it completely dark, they need to see where they're going and where food and water is.

What is their behavior? Are they huddling up together under the heat? This would mean they are cold.

I have a regulator that monitors temp attached to a ceramic bulb. It’s on 97. They did better last night.

Get a thermometer, and measure the temp down at their level. Sometimes temperature measuring devices, thermometers included, can be off a little. Make sure there is no draft. They could probably use a night light too. Total darkness all the time is not good either. They need daylight hours, and nighttime hours. Turning a light on during daylight hours works, if there is no other source of light.

They have light on during the day,and dim light at night.
Kind of related....but they are on pine chips. What the best way to clean? I was using a cat litter scoop, but it’s tedious with 35 chicks lol

I don't use shavings. Sorry I can't really help with that. I use the Rubbermaid shelf liner (waffled type). I cut them to fit, and make half a dozen, or so for each brooder. That way, I can change them more than once a day, as needed. Put the soiled ones in a bucket of soapy water, soak a little bit, then rinse, and dry. They're ready then, to be re-used.
