incoming, incoming!

We chose our breeds for docility, and I had some fun moments wondering if any of our girls were going to end up as "lap chickens."

Answer:

All of them.

The ladies are 4 weeks old today! They sleep outside, and are in the process of figuring our how to put themselves to bed without me pointing the way to the coop. They'll get it. Someday.

Agatha (Speckled Sussex)

Coconut (Welsummer)

Harris (Partridge Rock)

Waffles (Easter Egger)

Wonderful pictures and video! I think you are doing things just right

. Good size flock for your space, good breed decisions, good design, and most of all you are enjoying the heck out of them! Chicken therapy...nothing like it. They are lucky girls to have been chosen for your home.

5 weeks old!!!

Milestones: They're starting to sleep on their roosting pole (at least, that's where they start the night, who knows how long they stay there?). They've discovered that our planter bed/retainer wall thing makes a great chicken highway from their coop to the other side of the yard. They've stopped pooping on me so much. They go crazy when the "brown cup" comes out - it usually has mealworms and oats in it. They LOVE freeranging, but are still small enough that Tonks the Battlecat wants to eat them, so they can't be out at the same time. They've discovered that Tonks' favorite patio chair is a great place for a chicken nap, too! All 4 love the mulch in the herb garden, zucchini, and the chicken swing (ps. I'm looking for interesting, aesthetically pleasing roosting pole designs!).

Now for some pics!

All the girls (and my awesome garden shoes):

Waffles the EE walks on her sisters at every opportunity. She also flies up to my shoulders (well, fly is a strong word... it's more like climbing+flapping), and generally leads the pack when it's time to go to bed. Her legs are a beautiful green, she's got a peacomb but it doesn't look like a beard or muffs are going to grow in.

Harris the Partridge Rock is our snugglebug. She likes to settle into my lap for a nap, and is the girl who likes being pet the most. When one of her sisters is lost and chirping, she'll venture out to find them - and has started making a brand new chirping noise that must mean "hey, we're over here, silly!"

(Shhhh.... don't tell the other girls, but Coconut the Welsummer is my favorite!) Her head has feathered in a beautiful golden orange, her comb is just barely starting to grow in, and she's got an awesome, hawk-shaped beak. She's takes long naps on my lap, but snuggling is always on her terms. She has an awesome tail shake dance that's all her own.

Agatha the Speckled Sussex is... well... she's always kind of doing her own thing. She's the easiest to pick up and handle, but she's the first to jump out of my hands. She's got beautiful white breast feathers; her head and tail feathers are a little behind the curve. She's sweet, and I like to watch her run after her sisters; they often move onto the next thing while she's intently focused on eating the largest leaves she can stuff in her beak.

Some group shots... This is the best way to start my morning or close out the evening!
