Incubating and hatching eggs chat thread!!

Pics
Momma and hatched chick are still together. She is sitting on the remaining eggs once again. Time will tell. It's hard to know what the best thing to do is when you are in the moment of crisis. I will update.
Mamma and baby still doing well. No new chicks yet.

What does pipping mean, in hatching

Pipping is what you hear when the chick starts the process of hatching.

I am not the best one to explain - so I'm just going to say what I consider pipping...

Internal pip is when I see nothing on the shell but I can hear chirping.

External Pip is when the chick makes a first crack in the shell. You'll see just a little x usually in the shell. It looks like a raised section on the shell. It can be 24 hours before you see anything else. When they start to make that pip bigger, and start moving that break around the shell - that is zipping. There is LOTS of info out there. If you google chicken zipping, you can see lots of videos.

It's SO EXCITING when you get your first pip!!!

Yeah. A lot of people told me that the eggs they got off eBay never had hatched!

Just depends, people are honest/ dishonest everywhere. I recommend that you don't leave feedback until there is development. I purchased a dozen eggs that I couldn't find a breeder here. Only 3 developed. I cracked the clears and they had no bullseyes. Most people rate based on arrival of intact eggs. But the only power you have as a buyer on eBay is feedback. You only get one chance. Someone could pack up a dozen eggs from The supermarket and get $30-50, and get a great rating and nothing is even fertilized .

I've gotten poor typed silkies on there and nearly all hatched. In honesty, I was told all her pens were SG to SG and that was obviously not true. But it's not the best idea anyway.

Also, I read on BYC that someone was sold eggs on eBay that turned out to be barnyard mix but were presented as a hard-to-find breed.

Buyer beware.

That is so true!! People are dishonest and honest and it really helps to read all feedback on someone before you bid. Because it really depends on more than just fertility. The way the package the eggs, as well as how brutal the post office is. Plus our own hatching processes can make a difference. I've bought ebay eggs about a dozen times. I've had great hatches, and horrible. But I'd say that for the eggs that I feel were fertile when they were shipped, vs eggs that were infertile, I've gotten more fertile. If I buy from Ebay, I do look for sellers that are closer to me. But like you said, there are some dishonest people. I ALWAYS wait until hatch day before I leave feedback. Because I once got eggs that were NOT what I ordered. I didn't realize it until they hatched. So, now, I wait. I won't just leave bad feedback....I will indicate poor packaging or say great packaging but obvious rough treatment by the post office. If NOTHING develops, I'll message the seller. If they offer to send new eggs, I"ll hold off on leaving bad feedback. If they say, too bad, then I'll leave the poor feedback. I'm not the only one. If you see feedback about poor response from the seller, that's not someone you want to do business with.

Internal Pip-- When the chick breaks into the air cell and breathes. An egg that is chirping, but the outer shell is untouched, is internally pipped. I've had some quiet breeds that don't make a sound until they are nearly out.

External Pip-- When the chick breaks through the shell (usually after the internal pip). It may appear first as a small bump, then a crack. A malpositioned chick may externally pip, without internally pipping. It will then have air, but often struggles due to position. It is most obvious when it appears on the small end of the egg instead of the large.

Zip-- Following the external Pip, the chick begins to break/cut a line around the shell.
