Incubating eggs to hatch about August 8th

So, should we have the next official "candle day" next friday? And all you perpetual hatchers will just have to add in lots more candle days and keep us updated!

Votes?
I am up for giving it a try. I usually only candle at the beginning to take out the clears. What am I actually looking for on day 14? Quitters? How will I know?

Yep, obvious quitters. Some of the maybes on day 7 will clearly die and then start to rot, those are the ones you are looking for and wanting to pull on day 14.

Also, on day 14, you should have a clear ring of veins around the aircell, which is still easy to see then, but not easy to see after that. I find that after day 14, with my poor flashlight and poor eyesight, I have no reason to peek again. I just keep and eye and nose out for seeping and/or stench.

See, now I am wondering.....if I have my days correct. Hummmmmmmm.

I look for quitters and can tell because you wont see much chick growth in them

I also have my egg that has a red line in it so need to check in with that one too! I also check the aircells to see how they are coming along!

Are you hiding with me or are you confirming that I should be hiding????
Absolutely, Hon!!!

With this first batch I am candling again on day 14 and then I do one more right before lockdown. I generally candle on days 7, 14, and 18, then lockdown; then I candle any that don't hatch, and start assisting in "hatch".
My second batch I have 2 in the bator that I candle Monday and 6 under my broody that I am going to TRY and candle when she takes her dusting break

These are up to the broody...LOL!!! My CBF went broody in April; she screeched at me if I got near the brooder without announcing myself. LOL

And agreed...full candle-o-holics in this group..LOL!!!! Hope you have better luck with your shipped silkies @Puddin Fluff ! I love silkies!!!!

I look for quitters. I don't want to risk an explosion. I look for development that's way behind the other eggs and no movement. As long as the development is right around the others OR I see movement (or anything I can justify to myself means I should give the chick inside a chance, then I leave it). It actually takes a lot to get kicked out of my incubator.

I try to remember to mark the air cell at lockdown.

Are we all agreed to candle on Friday for the eggs due on/about the 8th/9th?

I vote whatever gets us the most candling days possible!!!!

Candle! Candle! Candle!
LOL...yep...we have problems keeping our hands off the eggs!!! I must confess...I have been know to sneak into a candling groups day that is not for my eggs

so tempting and easy when people are candling on different days

But I am trying REALLY hard not to over candle this hatch!

So far my little broody is still pretty friendly! She lets us pet and talk to her and still will hop up on our laps briefly during her dusting breaks

Hopefully during her break I can be sneaky and candle
hmm.png
And hoping she stays friendly after her babies hatch and lets us hold them

Thank goodness there are eggs in the bator too...just in case

I wm always afraid that I will remove one that was good. If I am notvsure it stays in.

Sounds good to me..

Seperate question: one egg when I candled obviously had developmemt but the air cell was sideways, not in the end. What are its chances of a good hatch?

Me too! I just want to make absolutely sure they won't hatch before I get rid of them!
