Incubating peafowl

Thanks feathered friend! That is a good idea that makes sense!

At hatch time can you let peafowl and baby chicks hatch together? Do you separate them as you take them out of bator?

Amanda
If they eggs are ready to hatch I will let them hatch together that is why it is good to have an incubator just for hatching. I also put them together in the same brooder which is in my garage for the first week then I move them to their own pens down to the coops. I have several grow out pens for different breeds and different ages. They may do well together but I would watch them closely. Good Luck with you hatches!

My solo peachick just hatched in my Brinsea 20. Whoo hoo!

How do you guys brood your peachicks? I'm thinking I might put him in with some week old chicken chicks, but I'd love to hear your experience with brooding. What kind of setup do you use? Wire, sand or wood chip floor? For food, do you use a higher protein turkey starter or medicated chick starter? Are peachicks temperature needs the same as chicks and turkeys...ie 85 degrees for first weeks til feathered?

TIA.

This is our first experience with peachicks. We have four peachicks and 7 eggs in the incubator.

We have discovered that peachicks fly EARLY!!! We have 2 see thru lg plastic storage bins that we set up as brooders for our hatching chicks. We have chicks in one and put the peachicks in the other. We walked in the room and one peachick was out of the brooder trying to get back in. Put something over 1/2 of it. Came back in a bit and had 3 escapees trying to get back in!! We had some left over hardware cloth from building the pens and I am using that on top of the bin. It curls so I just sat it on the top like a U and works good. I tried turning it the other way but it doesn't work as well.

I've been feeding them chick starter so hopefully that's ok!

No, they need much higher protein. You need to get either game bird startena or turkey starter. The chick starter will not allow them to grow as well, they might do "OK" but not thrive. They also love cat food and meal worms.

I feed mine medicated chick starter and they thrive, as they get older I add crack corn to it. I also recommend feeding it to your birds as well. It prevents Coccidia. Too much protein is bad for the chicks and leads to leg problems. Also be careful feeding live bugs to your birds esp when you do not know how and what those bugs were fed. Cat food should be a treat and not a steady diet. Chicks have a poor immune system and you do not want to expose them to anything harmful til about 6 months old. Mine do not even touch the ground til they are 6 months old. Once they do touch ground they are wormed.

You can find my setup and a couple others here to help you raise healthy chicks:

I am sure it has been asked in here and I know I have read it but I have read different thoughts, My Auto turner say's to put the eggs in point down, This is the way I am doing my Guinea and chicken eggs, How should I do My Pea eggs, If it is on there side I would have to do it by hand, if it is point up I would have to do some mods. Thanks

We put ours on their side using our auto-turner and then once in the am and once at night I turn them end to end- hopefully others will have ideas that work.
