Incubating peafowl

I have a sunleaves hydro thermometer with a probe to check temperatures... 3 broody marans, 2 broody sussex, one broody goose and a brinsea 20 advanced incubator and am awaiting the arrival of the egg-thermometer (the one that looks like an egg and will read the internal temp)... 3 Brodie's nested in boxes, two on the ground, and one behind the freezer :) to see if this makes a difference as to nest site....

I am keeping up with all data..... temperatures along with the # of days sitting, how often she gets off, how long she stays off, conditions that she is broody in (weather, where she nests, outside temperatures and humidity) I will eventually get a humidity tester that I can also put under a hen....

Hopefully I will get a few pairs of peas from this hatch and in a few years will test my finding on pea eggs to see if I can perfectly re-create (in the incubator) the broody hen experience for the pea eggs with real working data :)

Quote: Ok, so we're talking about chickens on a peafowl thread, but...one more story...Since Clueless Broody has totally abandoned her remaining eggs in favor of the 3 chicks she now is mothering, I brought the remaining 4 eggs in for disposal but thot, what the heck, I'll candle them quick. Results: 2 duds. 1 shrinkwrapped. 1 still developing! Not even an internal pip yet, but still progressing and moving! No lie, she got those eggs on APRIL 30. Two hatched on the 26th, one on the 28th. And now one is still viable and progressing. CRAZY And today is day 30! I put it in the incubator with my peacock egg. No other choice at this point, I don't guess. So here's hoping it makes it. :)

tomorrow afternoon!

I set 4 more Bronze pea eggs. I candled a bunch the other day and saw quite a few that look to be getting close to hatch. I have the dates written on the eggs so I know but worry about quitters since I seem to get those. It has to be my incubating since they get so far along. But, I have been rolling them side to side, over and over and end over end several times a day. I so hope that will cure my quitters.

I have been told that the very first egg a peahen lays is not fertile is this true please tell me she now has 2 eggs in her nest and I was not going to take them out to dee if she would brood since I don't have a broody or a incubator any help here would be great and also what is the best incubator for pea eggs and pheasants? Please help

That is NOT true. I place my peahen's first eggs in the incubator and I have chicks today. If your male is too young and doesn't mate then the eggs will not be fertile. How old are your birds?

my hen is 18 months old and my cock is 2 yrs old he I very protective of her on her nest I took out blue berrys and some cackle berries and he stayed inbetween me and her the whole time when she got up both eggs we under her so I left her alone untill I get a incubator or a broody can anyone tell me how long they can be in the nest before they go bad so I know how many days I have to get a incubator and what is the best for peas to incubate in

Just got our first peachicks this week and 7 fertile eggs!!!!

We just started chicken keeping a couple of months ago after having to quit our feed/seed/produce, etc business of many yrs this winter due to dr not letting dh unload heavy stuff now (genetic heart problem). We have 3 (just) grown kids and an 8 yo. Raising chickens to help replace some of the lost income (we hope). We have close to 300 chickens; 37 hatching starting tomorrow; and just set 36 chicken eggs and 7 peacocks eggs yesterday. (We are SO addicted!!)

NEWBIEs for sure (although my dh grew up on family farm (part of the land we live on now) so he familiar with chickens, I grew up in big city).

These are our first peafowl!!!!!!!!. The four peachicks are 3 whites and one silver/white pied. The eggs are silver, black shouldered, pied. (If I said that right?)

Is it ok that we started the peafowl eggs with the chicken eggs? Do we need to get another incubator to switch the 7 peafowl eggs to before the hen eggs start to hatch? (We are assuming so). Have we messed up already? Anything different we need to do with temp or humidity for the peafowl?

Thanks for any info/opinions/help and patience! LOL!

Amanda

4 peachicks, French BC Marans, Blue Laced Red Wynadottes, RIR, BR, BO, Australourpes, Red Comets, 14 we don't knows but love, 2 pr blue splash sport bantys, one VERY tame and spoiled lionhead bunny, one yellow lab, 2 shipoos, more hatching this week (our second hatch ever!) - Americanas, BO, and 11 combo of bantys and we don't knows our daughter was given to hatch, friend hatching 60 RIR due next wk, set more yesterday in used incubator we just got and 12 fertile Red Stars eggs waiting on a place; 225 baby chicks (mixed heavys) coming June 12.

(NEED NEED a big incubator but wallet says no and dh hasn't been able to find plans to build one (and then would need $$ for that too LOL) LG auto fan and egg turner; used Hovabator with no fan but auto egg turner. Going where God leads... heartbreaking closing our business, but trusting and following where He leads..... stretching our faith ..... always fun to see where God takes us .... although can be nerve wracking when faith is low! Glad God is patient!! :)

I would get another incubator for hatching. Your chicken eggs are going to hatch before the peafowl. I always use a 2nd incubator for the hatching only. It helps when I have eggs hatching at different times and the first incubator is kept clean and always ready for more eggs.
I also have my first 7 peafowl eggs incubating and they are on day 7 but I am not seeing any signs of life. This is the first eggs that this peafowl has layed. Is it normal for the first eggs to not be fertile?? The hen is in with a 2 year old male and she is the same age and I see them mating often but would really like to know if this is normal for her first clutch of eggs to not be fertile. So far she is still laying so I will be adding more eggs as she lays them in hopes I soon get some fertile eggs.

Thanks feathered friend! That is a good idea that makes sense!

At hatch time can you let peafowl and baby chicks hatch together? Do you separate them as you take them out of bator?
