This is my first time incubating shipped eggs. The eggs arrived safe and sound all individually wrapped in bubble wrap... laying on their side. Now I took each one and place them in my egg turner for which they have spent the last 17 days.... I candled.. 11 out of 13 look promising were put back in the bator for lock down. I have them in those paper type egg cartons that were cut down (cups about half original size and holes in the bottoms) . I am in hopes that for any reason that one would try to pip on the side.... it would have a better chance of getting out safely.

NOW my question is for those of you that are have successful experiences with hatching shipped eggs is how... do you set them up in the bator for lockdown IF they are shipped to you laying on their sides???????

thank you,
renie

I have heard of people hatching them in cartons without any problems. I just lay mine on their side. I don't have a turner in my incubator, so of course they are hand turned too. I have some pretty good hatches. Just hatched 18 out of 24 eggs.

Whichever part of the egg you saw the air cell on, put that side up for hatch. Otherwise, they can turn around in the egg before pipping to figure out which way to get out to air.

I've had right side up eggs pip & zip on the bottom,non-air-cell, side & do fine too.

I wouldn't worry too much about it.

Out of curiosity, did you put your eggs into the egg turner big-end-up, or on their sides?

It shouldn't matter whether they were laying on their sides or not. Unfortunately they're going to be on their side, upside down, right side up and every which way by the time they get to you. You'll get a better hatch rate if you let them rest big end up for 8 -24 hours before incubating.

I'm trying my 3 rd batch of shipped eggs. It seems to be going better, only 5 of 7 bantie eggs appearred to be clear. All others had babies in them and I'm on day 19 and they are rocking around. Other people have better luck with shipped eggs. Me not so much. All others ended up with 1 and the last only 2 chickies. So Good Luck with you hatch, I hope all your babies hatch

Yes... big end up. Just checked the bator.. I have 11 shipped eggs from BYC member Gumpsgirl none have pipped yet but I am very hopeful.. I have 24 Buff orps of my own for which 4 have pipped so far. But it is Way early soo we shall see.

Thanks you for sharing your experience.

If they've been big-end-up all through incubation, that end is where the air should be. If they're on their side at pip time, that's okay too. they little ones know which way is up & out if they're healthy. Good luck with your hatch.
All my hatches have been shipped eggs and of this spring, I've been getting all 100% rates. BTW i love the paper egg carton w/ hole in bottom & cut down, it's what i use too

I have been hatching for 6 years my own egg's as well as shipped ones.I used Sportsman for 5 years. The turning process with a tuner varies other than if you hand turn eggs from side to side without a turner. But Had very good sucess with egg's I had to had turn from side to side.I had used some larger egg cartons in Sportsman during inc. Due to larger duck and turkey egg's,but egg's alway's went on sides for hatch.I had better results hand turning goose eggs in an old LG over my Sportsman. But water fowl require basicly misting with water daily also. The first shipped eggs I bought in Dec last year they were hand turned and had almost 100% from them.Chicken egg's naturaly lay on their sides in nest so...They just get played like pinballs by the hens lol. It's basic roration though that keeps the embyro's growing as long as they are moved a round a lot.If you are using a tuner big end up.
