Hello everyone, my family and I are newbies that just hatched 3 chicks one week ago. Today a friend gave me 4 more chicks. Is it ok to put them together. The eggs I hatched came from her, but she says the new chicks came from the auction. I am concerned about illness, disease or aggressiveness. Please help!

Well, this started out as my son's science project. My husband watched one hatch and fell in love. He decided he wanted each of us to have one. We hatched three of them from eggs. They hatched last week. I asked the lady that have them to me for more eggs but she bought me 4 chicks. They were not real clean and 2 had pasty butt. I had to clean them up and look them over real good. I didn't know they came from the auction until after I had them in with the others. One in acting really strange. It just kind of stands under the light like it is nodding, lol. I am not sure of the breed of any of them. The eggs came from her mixed flock but the new ones came from the auction as I stated. I'm worried because I put them together.

my kids have already grown attached and I would hate fire anything to happen to the ones we hatched. Please, any advice or assistance would be appreciated.
BTW I am originally from Plainfield, NJ, I now reside in GA!

I'm not sure if I posted or not, but the broody eggs (set 4) hatched on Wednesday. She hatched 100%. 5/5

Woke up this morning and heard one screaming in the coop. It got out of the nest and couldn't find it's way back. Guess at 2 days old they can't jump the 13 inches to get back in the box she picked.

Well, thanks to my wonder family full of enablers, I've done both. I got a Brinsea incubator the last two years for my Christmas/birthday (December babies understand) present. I bought Welsummer and Legbars eggs from @dheltzel this January and hatched those (unintentionally on Valentines day). Last July I bought some Marans and two of them have gone Broody twice since January... crazies. So, they are now sitting on their second 'batch' of eggs. I'm expecting them to hatch during the week of June 6th.

That's what I was thinking. Ours were always one roomers with barely any space for your knees. That must be the deluxe model.

Well, Mr. Tucker's got himself a reprieve, at least for now.

Before DW went back to work, I was asking her about the controls on her new stove so I could get the hot water ready. She asked if I planned to "do the deed" today. I told her I was as soon as the water got hot enough. Then I let her talk me into holding off, at least for the time being, and start carrying a stick with me in the run in case he decides to try me again.

I know y'all think I'm only delaying the inevitable, and maybe / probably I am, but I've been sitting here thinking about it all day & most of last night since our little "encounter", and haven't felt at all comfortable with the finality of it all. I drove a lot of miles to get him, and have since invested a lot of time in him, and if I end it all now, I'll be that much longer getting the darker eggs that started this operation to begin with. Not that darker eggs are better than any others; I've known all along that isn't the case, but I happen to prefer them, and as long as I'm housing & feeding the producers of those eggs, why not try to get the results I want, the quickest way possible? Besides all that, I fell in love with him the first time I laid eyes on him; I thought he was a strikingly beautiful animal then, and I always will, regardless of the cause of his demise. Anyway, is it really his fault that he's protective of his little harem of redheads, or that his testosterone level is high? Isn't that the case with most males in their prime, regardless of species?

Okay, I admit it; I'm really a big softy about animals. That's just me, & I can live with that.

Well, I am back into incubating. I set 35 eggs tonight. Leghorns (3 varieties) crested cream legbars, Marans and silkies. Send good hatching pullet vibes my way! Last 2 hatches were 2/3 male!

Well I got the incubator filled back up. Woke up with plans for the day cancelled due to rain. Decided to make the hour drive to an auction. Was hoping to get rid of some birds but got there late and realized I was last in a very long line of sellers which doesn't usually go so well. Decided to keep my birds in the truck and see what they had. Came home with 3 dzn mixed color cochin and 8 amaraucana which interestingly enough are marked EE on the shell. Don't have my hopes high but figured it's worth a shot to walk away with almost 4 dzn eggs for 12 bucks. Already have them set and this time I double checked that the bator was plugged in correctly.

Crystal, my silver OE hen, has decided to sit eggs. I stuffed eggs from my other hens under her. So she is sitting on SPBWs, OE's, and OE/Sapphire and one SPBW/SBEL. Finger's crossed.

The agenda was to spend some time with my sister, and pick up some vegetable plants I can only find out her way. On the way out the door, I asked her if I should bring my purse? I didn't really see a point in it.
We were down the road before she asked if I want to go winetasting with her.
The first place required ID, so I was out of luck there. I slipped some cash into my sister's back pocket, and waited a while before telling her what two wines I wanted. She was preoccupied with other things, so it wasn't getting the connection. She bought the two wines, but only one was for me.
In the car, we sorted it all out. The wine was a gift to me.
Next we stopped at a beer distributor. That guy... I guess wearing shorts too short to see was a good thing today!

I wasn't carded, got a freebie and a discount.
Then the plants. Watermelon, Serrano peppers and cucumbers.
Finally, another wine tasting. The woman was practically pouring full classes each time! Anything my sister tried, the woman poured for me as well.

I haven't had a thing to eat today! I bought three bottles there, but gave one to my sister.
Total cost for the whole point of this trip $8
Total cost because Abi is a lush $86

I worked until after dark clearing the site for the new coop, so I broke down and ordered take out as a treat - I'll cook the chicken tomorrow.

I have sad news - well, a confirmation. Remember how Dotty went missing several days ago? I couldn't find feathers or anything, and thought there was a chance she was trying to go broody again on a wild nest, but couldn't find her anywhere despite a pretty stubborn search (VERY thick brush in the back of the property). This morning I woke up around 3:15am to some strange noises - a rooster alarming, a stuttering/chattering sound, then a lot of barking of neighbor dogs, then nothing. I went out with the flashlight, and all I could do was confirm all cooped birds were ok (though awake).

Just now before dark I did a survey, and found this outside the Tank/SS paddock (in the back/wild area where I last saw Dotty wandering):


And a trail of feathers ending in the fence (looks like she was pulled through):


I think something finally found her on her nest. Neighbor saw a fox - I'm assuming that was it or something similar. It's sad, but sort of a chicken Darwin Award, though. She refused to stay in her area (paddock/coop) or take shelter like any chicken with a lick of sense would. She didn't have the right instincts to tell her how dangerous that was to sleep out over night on the ground or wander around on her own. If she had lived, I had already decided not to breed from her. Still sad though - she was cute in her own crazy chicken way...

W caught a bunch of Bluegills and Crappie.... Both black and white crappie..... Had a pretty Good time.... And although i wasnt thrilled with having to rebuild the starter on my outboard it worked great....

LOL They are so cute and fluffy. I only had 1 splash hatch, and it's TINY. It's from Christmas and still half the size of the other babies her age. I also have a young frilkie in there. There is a buff with a black head is super cute baby also. All 3 of those were shipped eggs.

Just so happened to time my egg collecting correctly last night. Caught my broody off the nest for her daily stretch. It looks as though at least one egg has an external pip. Looks promising that she will make it this time. Its her first batch so the possibility still exist for issues but at least we made it this far.

First ever hatch was huge success. 24 quail eggs and most hatched already. 10-12 hrs early.

I feel like giving a red carpet speach to thank everyone that wrote the countless articles I read to make this first hatch so successful.

Yikes!! add scorpions to the list of things I don't like. I have a extreme phobia of going under my house due to snakes and spiders. Takes me 30+ minutes to work up the courage to go under and do something that takes 5 minutes or less. Not a fan of scorpions for sure.

those are always concerns. Personally I would keep them separate for at least a month to prevent your hatchlings from catching anything from your mystery chicks

So how many days is the longest you'd leave an egg in the hatcher ... I have 3 left on day 23? I think... There were some randomly stuck in and I couldn't see inside them they could be duds but I don't want to kill them! 25? Is my guess to pull them...
