I need more ventilation. I built it to keep drafts off the roosts in winter, and it is insulated, but that means even with the East and West Windows open no breeze goes to the roost. I need a Summer vent that I can close up later.

There's a hydraulic vent arm that requires no electricity or batteries it operates on temperature pushing the ram open with heat and closed when cooler. I've built a metal chimney with the vent on top to open and close. Idea of chimney is when it gets hot from the sun then it draws hot air out of coop. That and the vent and fan in the door works really well.

Wouldn't it be nice if we could beam ourselves to each others places and help build fences and coops? We'd get a lot done in no time.

It was a very mild winter here and then we had several hard freezes in April after all the fruit had bloomed. Lost every piece of fruit.

I have a hen named '12'. Confuses me too. I usually reserve #s 1-20 for roosters.

Firstly, sometimes they just don't make it.
Is this your first time raising chicks?
How big is your brooder? Is it big enough to have a warm spot and lots of cool space?
What are you using for a heat source?
Some vitamins in the water may help. A couple drops of Poly-vi-sol without iron works.

We just hit 89 at close to 10:30PM. Still 60% humidity. I was out setting traps and moving hoses. It is stifling in the coops and I'm soaking wet.

Agree, they sleep a lot the first couple days so it may be nothing.
PIPACHICK....the baby died right after I posted earlier. I don't know what went wrong. the other two are still in incubator it is small but I never hatch big so it usually gets the job done except this time. thanks everyone for replying I pray the others are OK I'm camping next to them tonight.

I have a storm door as the human entrance. I need to figure out how to hardware cloth over the screen area so I can leave that open. Any suggestions?

Is the storm door metal. Sheet metal screws self tapping with washers to hold it in place. If there electricity near the door you could put a fan on the door as well

Would you send me pictures and names? I was thinking of the spinning things(name?) like on my storm shelter.

Baby swaddeling blankets work wonders in a pinch! (have swaddled many precious ducks&chicks like that for peace&quite the first few nights under the lights)
DO NOT ATTEMPT at Home unless you are trained LPN/ob or paided fire&rescue. Please don't say why- it's a very long complicated&commical story.

That's a good idea. I had been watching some fans on E-bay that I could put in a gable vent. I have to get on that.
Most of my buildings have big ventilation though and it is usually the same temp inside and out. The brooder house felt really stuffy when I was out there though.

The humidity you have to put up with is scary. We are a very dry heat most of the time. I have gable vent fan on house. Coop has the chimney that draws heat out.

my chickens don't have a fan(least the grown up,ones outside). Hope my chickens love me anyway.
(talk about feeling inadaquate)
It is all in how much airflow and your temperatures. We are all learning. This is my first full summer, as I started at the end of July last year.

Yes let me do some searching the arm came from our local seed company that sells all kinds of gardening devices. It has been working for me for at least 5 years now. I'm impressed with the simplicity of the thing. BRB
