Gave our two little chicks some blueberries to inspect, they were unimpressed.

...

And our 3 remaining chicks from the April Hatch-a-long are 7 weeks old today. I think the two bigger ones are both hens. I have known the other is a rooster since 2 weeks old.
If you cut them up small enough, they'll probably eat them.
We tend to forget that chickens don't have hands or teeth so they need bite size things.
That's why chick starter feed is such tiny crumbles.
An adult chicken will ignore a whole carrot but if you dice it finely enough, they'll eat the whole thing. Same with other hard things like broccoli spears and cucumbers.
When feeding Macaws, we had precise sizes we had to cut the fruits, vegetables and root crops so they could eat them. Sometimes 4 or 5 of us would spend about 3 hours cutting fruits and vegetables.

Some of the stores brought in from the market.

Morning chop session.
They didn't have a proper table. It sat on barrels so you couldn't get close enough to it to be able to comfortably reach the center.
With virtually no tools, save a machete and a hammer, I made a pedestal table out of this one. I took the center of a tree trunk where the branches begin to spread attaching the branches to the table top with some salvage nails and attached the other end of the trunk to a large board for a base.

Sticking her tongue out at a bird that had bonded with her and followed her around the flight cage as she was doing chores.

The dot on the right over the beach is a scarlet released into the wild.

The possible broody hen I mentioned this morning, after switching nests, has been glued down all day. This could get interesting.

Congratulations.

On bad days, when nothing I say or do seems right, I rearrange the house. Today, I have decided it is time to turn the crib into a toddler bed.
She has no idea what that bar is for… Apparently I don't either.

She is now jumping head first down the ramp she created.

My daughter, at about 2 loved to climb kitchen chairs, then onto the kitchen table, only to jump to the floor - over and over.

The bars under the crib feet are a story for another day. I did not tell her to lay down, she did that on her own.
She loves the feeling of freedom.

How do I get an NPIP certification
smile.png
Every state is different. It is a national program administered by states. Check with your state AG department. They'll fill you in on all the particulars.
It is free in most states. I think there's a couple where you have to pay the gas for the tester to get to your house/farm.
Most states have 2 programs. One is for commercial properties and another tests small flocks.

Do I need,an NPIP to ship fertile eggs and chicks
Only if you want to do so legally.
To be legal, you need the minimum NPIP certification to ship across state lines.
In Missouri, you're supposed to be NPIP to even sell poultry in-state.
Some like Montana or Wyoming are pretty lax.
Some, like Texas and a couple other southern states also require AI clean for importation into the state.
AI is one of a number of optional blood tests above the basic P/T test. Optional tests are at additional charge.
It was recommended to me NOT to test for AI because of my rare birds. If after the preliminary test and a more thorough second test, they were determined to have antibodies for HPAI, they would be forced to cull the entire flock. That would be devastating for 2 reasons. I couldn't obtain replacement stock but also because that meant they were immune.

To legally ship to another state NPIP is the min. requirement. Some states have additional requirements, you would have to check the laws of the state you are shipping too.
X2

Hmm... I didn't sleep well last night. Too many scary decisions to make. I have not been able to make myself clear today, and often have felt afraid of saying the wrong thing. And doing it! Duckling slammed the door on the dog today, then pushed it as hard as she could, crushing him (nine pound dog). She woke too early (may have been cold) and has been sassy.

On the other hand, God is taking care of me (though I no longer know what to think about certain things!) and Duckling is still my well behaved baby girl. She went to bed with almost no trouble (none to speak of. She was just a smidge unsure about the new way of going to bed). Now, if I could just figure out why the monitor isn't working!
Scary decisions, once made, are no longer scary.

What kind of monitor is it?
Batteries in the parent unit?
Baby unit getting power?
Are they synching up?

Here's a picture of the metal chimney that draws heat out of coop/greenhouse with the vent opened from the vent opener.

That is where the vent arm that opens and closes the lid goes. I'll go take a picture of the fan in the door for you before it gets dark. It's lower to the ground to bring in as cool of air as I can get. The metal chimney acts
as a fan of sorts as it gets really hot with the sun hitting it. Then the hotter air rises through that drawing the hot air from coop with it.

Nice design. At what temperature does it close?
I have one building with a vented cupola and ridge vents and a vented area along the bottom on the deeply shaded side. Besides the windows, that draws the coolest air available into the building and out the top.
My only thought is, do you have a means of keeping raccoons out when it is open?

Yea oaks not very comfy. Yes fluffy carpet is a wonderful thing.
My dog/s love sleeping on the tile floor. I guess because it is so cool.

Help help help.my wood duck eggs has some black spots on the veins.will it make it.What do they mean
Are they in the incubator?

Hey, look, I'm still around!
Voila! Me too, just not all day.

Good morning, beasy today! 25 family member coming for DD birthday BBQ party!

Great feast. Too bad I'm not closer.

Socks seem to have a way of always disappearing. At least you found it I guess.

Morning all. It's Friday. Gonna be a busy one. Trying to cram as much of 2 weeks worth into today as possible. Head out for training in Texas Sunday. If I don't get ahead it will be ugly when I get back. Good thing I have 2 monitors.
Ever see the Seinfeld episode where he talks about why and how socks go missing?

That hen that's gone broody is still sitting tight, her wings spread out like a blanket, but I'm wondering if I should take her off the nest long enough to mark the eggs, and risk having her quit, It's been better than 2 days like that, and I haven't been able to catch her off the nest to poop or eat. She "growls" whenever I or another bird get too close,so I doubt she's let another bird lay an egg in her nest to this point.

The only other time one of my hens brooded, I didn't think to date any eggs, and she wound up with 12-15 eggs under her, none of which hatched.

I thought about putting her in a crate so the others can't get to her, but the only crates I have are too big to fit in the coop. I could crate her under the coop, or in the run, I guess.

Any suggestions?

She sounds broody to me. What breed is she?
I just wait till they come off on their own for their daily stretch, defecation, eat and drink. Then I swoop in to mark eggs or remove volunteers.
In the run would be OK if it is predator proof. Do you have a basement or secure garage?

@daxigait This is the building I told you about with the big windows on both east and west walls. Open year round.

This is what it is like raising chickens in MO.

No

The middle is where the heat is (so too hot) and the fan (too cold).
OK, I moved the eggs to the sides.

that image is why you want to move them around in the bator

glad to hear it

farvits? it means "far its" he hit v instead of space
THX

I also candled two of the eggs and didn't get any really good pics (as usual,
roll.png
), but I did get pics of what the air cell looks like. I marked the air cell on one of them. Sorry, the pics are bad.

third from front.

The air cell is most definitely too small. I took out all the water.

WRONG!!!   "Heaven" is singular. Adding the 's makes it possesive. And "Heavens" is plural; there isn't but one Heaven!!!!!

So am I. I just whupped up on Bubbles in a spelling bee  :gig

Okay, you win. Make sure you frame it and put it right next to Chaos' proof of victory, because victory doesn't come often... :gig

But it wasn't a spelling bee. I saw nothing about spelling. :smack

@ChickenCanoe

No way am I quoting that long post.

Yes, I have a full basement, but the point is moot, at least for now: she quit the nest. Maybe she'll try again; we'll see.

That 3-legged chick didn't come from a double yolker, did it?
