i dont know where i would find straw but i can get hay and mulch hay (very good quality) for FREE, i just have to help bale and stackWell that is perfect, isn't it.
We can't even get straw around here now. Everyone is sold out and hay is waaaay more expensive than it was a few years ago.
I've never run out of ovates before but apparently I have because the box is greyed out.
All 4 of the other eggs due today have pips of various sizes. I feel bad for the wrong ender because it was from the best egg and I put it in a plastic container for pedigree.
The worst part is that I have 3 more due tomorrow (stupid, I know).
Hopefully the new pippers will get far enough along that I can pull this one out before the other 3 pip.
Yayyyyyy!!!!
Hi, sort of lurking and drinking some wine. Hope you all are well and your chicks or ducklings or pea chicks oh and goats are great.
Benny I am so glad I don't have to worry about a mongoose but mink here are just as bad.
And with that, Good Night! Working this weekend and next but may be doing some chicks shopping tomorrow. Hubby hasn't said no yet. COCHINS AGAIN!
i can imagine, i hate stores like that, or employees like thatThey were really rude about it!

ROFL!! why not take root beer add vanilla vodka then ice cream
or somethingThat what I told them, but they think that just because they are made at the same mill that they are the same product. I tried to explain it to them, but they are just too dense or something.

cant wait to see them!Hi everyone, I have been sooo busy with work, getting a place ready for the broody and her chicks, and getting ready for vacation that I have not been able to get caught up.
@BantyChooks @Pensmaster and the others hope your hatch is going well, I saw my first head this evening and heard more peeping![]()
I will find out how many tomorrow evening when I move her.
She showed one to me, but when I tried a picture she puffed up and hid it. Since more are hatching pictures will have to come tomorrow.
I really wish you would try the Vitamins. Now, especially if wry neck is setting in. Plus, Neo on the yolk that is left. Putting water on it, might cause infection. :/
lol, you werent that far off, and you are fine!lol...I'm sure a lot of you are going what? Don't you just love how I come in every 200 or so posts, and do catch up...on some posts? Some of you may or may not remember where, when that was talked about by now. Sorry. I only come in once in a while...I'm worried about little ducky.
WOOHOO!! welcome to the thread!Just recieved our incubator today (incuview)! Gonna run it for a few days to see how it tests then planning to set on the full moon next week, the 19th.
We are going to set 15 of our own eggs, barnyard mix of dark egg layers, easter/olive eggers and a couple Andalusian. Also setting 12 BCM/blue/splash from a hatchery a few cities away.
Any tips or pointers that I wouldn't find in the forums would be great.

lol, arent they do in like 6 hours 42 minutes and 32 seconds???No pips yet.![]()
my old timer friend always told me olive oil, it also is good for leather care, has no smell, or color, and won't destroy stitching most importantly. They have found olive oil in europe over 1000 years old that is still perfect for useI already told her. Gotta keep carbon steel oiled though or it'll rust. Tip I got from an old-timer was to use vegetable or olive oil, that way you don't taint your meat with chemical laced synthetic knife oil.
LOL, make sure to tag kathy!I was taking pictures of a SPR pullet that was sitting on the arm of the swing. Suddenly, she pooped. So, I took a picture of that!![]()
where are our pictures? congrats!!Number six just hatched and the kids videoed it. Hard to see, but they were pretty excited!

good morning KenHey, Liz
Same here across the state from you. We had some severe storms as the cold front moved through and now we have a couple day break with lower humidity and highs in the 80s. Sunday the heat and humidity return.our temps have been in the nineties whth humidity at 88% right now.
lol...I'm sure a lot of you are going what? ...
You can't let her underbelly touch anything that will hold heat. An elevated wire bottom cage has been used for centuries.Couldn't break her. Tried for the last three days. Every afternoon same story setting on more eggs. So I'll have to pull new eggs from her every day.
Yep! I update the hatcher list and recently started on keeping the notes up-to-date.
I second what everyone else said about calibrating. Don't trust any unknown thermometer, hygrometer or even the displays on the incubator.Just recieved our incubator today (incuview)! Gonna run it for a few days to see how it tests then planning to set on the full moon next week, the 19th.

That works well wherever the sun reaches the ground.Solar disinfection -tip how to use the hot summer sun for the benefit of your chickens
A lot of parasites use the ground as a intermediate medium in between infection of your flock. Fungi, bacteria , worms, coci, and viruses including the dreaded MDV .
You can eliminate this parasites from your coop and run by a simple act. (That could be only if you have the time, hot sun and patience!) The method is called solar desinfectio. The principal is very easy, you cover your coop floor and your run with a transparent polyethylene sheets ( plastic) put on it some stone or bagg full with sand for fixing it on the ground, and live it in the sun for a week or more.
The green house effect that occur under the plastic sheet will rase the temp to a degree that will kill almost everything in the top soil!
In Israel the farmers use that method on entire fields!
It is very recommended when you change flocks, after you took out the first, and before entering the second.

The sooner the better.Good morning everyone. I wish I could capture the beautiful Red Dawn we had this morning, but there is not enough light.
For those of you that have had broodies I have a question. I need to balance the eggs that are still hatching and the chicks that started last night in the evening. The Broody is in a high box in a coop that is too crowded. I built Coop that the Broody and her chicks can stay in while I am on vacation. I have to leave in the morning, and the chicks from last night we'll have to eat and drink soon. When would you move her?
High carbon steel takes an edge easily but doesn't hold it well. Stainless is very hard to sharpen but holds an edge longer.Good Morning, Abi. How are ya?![]()
Get Chaos to tell you where he got that knife he has, made of carbon steel. I'm no knife expert, but carbon steel's reputed to take & hold the best edge
I have a wet stone somewhere but haven't used it in years. My son gave me a Chef'sChoice diamond hone that I use and I use a steel also. If the knife is really in bad shape I use a file to get it close till I use the hone.I would love to know, and have bopinions an the best sharpening (wet) stone. @Chaos18 @ChickenCanoe
X2 Don't leave it in the rain.I already told her. Gotta keep carbon steel oiled though or it'll rust. Tip I got from an old-timer was to use vegetable or olive oil, that way you don't taint your meat with chemical laced synthetic knife oil.
Do you hatch bantam eggs at higher temps because you are impatient?Woohoo!! Thanks, I'm so terribly impatient. I'm used to hatching bantams, at slightly higher temps, so I usually get pips by day 18.....
reeeaathe, bubbles, breathe...... Only on day 20.....![]()
No.![]()
Good morning whites!
Very much so.

I don't currently use one but the simplest way I've done it is to put it outside in the shade for an hour or so. Go to the accuweather website and enter your zip code. Get the humidity for your area and compare it to that on the hygrometer.I know how to calibrate my themometer but not the hygrometer. That would be helpfull!
Aside from a file or a steel, I primarily use this after they're fairly sharp.Maybe ChickenCanoe can offer better advice on a wet stone than I can. I actually don't use one. If I need to just put a quick sharp edge or touch up an edge when using a knife for butchering I always use a good quality sharpening steel. I don't use high quality knives so if I need to use something other than the sharpening steel I'll just use any regular knife sharpener and then touch it up with the steel. I've heard good things about any of the Lansky Knife Sharpening Systems but have never actually used one.
As long as it is a decent steel, I don't think the brand matters as much as technique. So what sharpening steel do you use?
Have a safe trip. Have your gear packed?Good morning Pens. Thanks for pointing out MC's response. I missed it.
@MotorcycleChick thank you, I will do it this afternoon when I get off. Since I leave tomorrow, I asked off at 3:30.
Hard boil a couple eggs while you're getting ready for work, stick them in your pocket and eat them on the road. That's what I did when I had to go to work too early for a good breakfast.I want some! It would sure beat my protien bar.![]()
@kwhites634 Good luck on your nice build!
